Ultimately 80’s Playlist

I’m trying to make the ultimate collection of 80’s music, and I’ve already got quite a lot of good stuff, but I’m always up for more 80’s goodness. Any suggestions?

Rusko – Hold On (feat Amber Coffman)

Rusko is one of the buzziest new producers on the dubstep scene, making music with booming bass lines and silky synths. Hold On is sure to be one of the most played songs at the club this summer, with it’s lets get a party started atmosphere and R&B infused vocals from Amber Coffman.

His O.M.G.! album is out now.

The Hundred In The Hands

On of the best musical trends to come out over the last few years, in my humble opinion, is the merging of dance and indie music. Are they dance? Are they indie? Who cares?! It all sounds awesome to me, and that’s all that matters.

The Hundred In The Hands is one of those bands that seamlessly seems to float between both worlds. Eleanore Everdell has the dreamy voice of an indie chanteuse every hipster will want to talk about, but they add to that mix some great electronic melodies to add a little pep to their step. It all ends up sounding a bit like this:

They’ve got a great EP out now called ‘This Desert’ that you should check out and a full length coming in September. Need more convincing? Check out this EP sampler where Fab 5 Freddy and Grandmaster Flash needle drop tracks off ‘This Desert.’ It’s a pretty cool way to promote an album, if you ask me.

Warm Waves Mixtape

OK folks, I hope you are excited, because it is time for the first official C’est Non Un Blog mixtape! It has a name and cover art and everything! Download it here!

Now granted, I didn’t make the cover art myself. I actually stole it from an ambient chill-out band called Warm Waves (not included on this mixtape) that I discovered this week on a Swedish music blog I also discovered (actually written IN Swedish!) and the image just immediately sucked me in, beautifully visualizing everything this music makes me feel when I listen to it. Plus, even though it looks like album artwork, it’s not actually the album artwork they used for their first EP, which you can find for free here. So I figured, well, somebody better get some use out of it, right?

If you’ve downloaded the two mixtapes I made previously for Amy, then you’re going to have a pretty good idea of what to look forward to here. Lots of music perfect for a summer hipster dance party: cool, breezy, beautiful songs that’ll get your head bobbing up and down and your hips a-shaking.

Highlights include 3 pretty cool covers, like CFCF’s too-cool-for-school cover of How Bizarre, CoolRunnings’ synthy cover of Road To Nowhere that wouldn’t feel out of place at the end of an 80’s movie, and a reggae cover of Express Yourself by Hopeton Lewis.

Moulinex’s Come On Closer (Pinapples) is possibly one of my favorite songs ever right now, with great soaring disco vocals and a beat that always seems to be moving forward, even though it never speeds up.

The Boys Noize remix of FrankMusik’s When You’re Around sounds a bit as if Mozart programmed a glockenspiel into a sequencer for some thumping club music.

If all you know about Pogo’s music is from his videos on YouTube, then you’re in for a treat with his Mending.

Did you know that the industrial band Ministry was originally a synth-pop band in the 80’s? Me neither! Enjoy their She’s Got A Cause from their early album With Sympathy, which doesn’t sound out of place in the least with the other music on this mix.

The Clive Tanaka y su orquesta track I Want You (So Bad) you can actually only find on a mixtape he put out. An ACTUAL cassette tape. Yep, that’s right. No CD or iTunes download as of yet. I’m still trying to find every song on it on the internet. So far I’ve got a little over half.

Finally I’d like to draw your attention to Duck Sauce’s Barbara Streisand, which is possibly the most infectious song of the summer. Try arguing any different with me and I’ll call you a liar.

———

Well, I hope you enjoy the mixtape! As always, if you like what you hear I’d like to know. I love finding out what kind of music resonates with others as much as it does with me.

Spreading The Love

By the way, my regular readers (all five of you) might be interested to know that I’m now writing for a new blog. Don’t worry, all of my ruminations and suggestions for new music will still be found here, but if you’d like to read amusing essays infused with irony about who I find attractive, you might want to check out People I Want To Bone.

The genesis of People I Want To Bone arose from my friend Brandon loudly announcing in an online chat session that he was surprised to discover that he wanted to have sex with an editor of the Merriam-Webster Dictionary. This surprise revelation, coupled with a need to stretch his legs artistically, led him to state that it wouldn’t it be cool to have a document of all of the people he was, er, strongly attracted to. I suggested that the blog should be named People I Want To Bone (that being the crudest thing I could think of at the moment) and long story short, we’re suddenly both writers on a site of that name.

Yes, the site is crude and a little sexist, but it’s all in good fun, along the lines of Stuff White People Like. The goal is to have this thing go viral and become super (internet) famous because of it. And we’re not opposed to adding additional writers to the roster as well. In fact, if there are any ladies out there who think that they can write regular amusing posts about who they would like to bone, we’re all for that. We’re equal opportunity boners. I just hope you get as much of a kick out of the site as I do.

Best Coast

This has to be the best summer that I can remember for delivering excellent summer music, which is definitely a good thing, considering all of heat most of the country has had to go through. The latest band to get a truck load of indie cred dumped on them is Best Coast, whose new album comes out July 27th. They combine Southern California surf rock with the grit of NYC girl group vocals. Their first single is the dreamy When I’m With You. The album is really great and you should totally check it out.

What’s the best way to improve your indie cred? Do a collaboration with Vampire Weekend and Kid Cudi for Converse! In the world of hip-hop there is no one that exemplifies indie hipster street cred better than Kid Cudi, and his rhymes sound so smooth over Bethany Cosentino’s breathy ooo’s. I want to know how they made those paper heads so that I can have one. You can get the corporate sponsored single for free here.

Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs – Garden

I have no idea why I’ve waited until now to share this video. I’ve only watched it like five times in as many days. This song is just so pretty, pretty, pretty…relaxing and hypnotic and bubbly bouncy. The video is beautiful as well. Lots of great blues and oranges and I love the use of water. The outfits they are both wearing are killer too. Definitely recommend you check these guys out.

Brandon Flowers – Crossfire

Will ninja please kidnap me so that Charlize Theron can come rescue me? Please?

BTW, what the hell did Brandon Flowers do to the damn ninjas to have them want to keep kidnapping and torturing him? He must have really pissed those ninjas off.

Classixx – I’ll Get You (feat. Jeppe)

There’s not much to this video other than a girl dancing around the beach, but the song is good enough to make the video work. On vocals is Jeppe, formerly of Junior Senior *sniff*.

Try to have fun while attempting not to melt, America!

Mixtape #2! (Now With More Patriotism!)

Just in time for your holiday weekend, I give you the second mixtape that I made for ! Nevermind the fact that it is labeled “Amy’s Memorial Day Mix,” since she never listened to it until a week ago anyway. For all extensive purposes it’s now the “Independence Day Mix.” Why not? We’re just swapping one patriotic holiday for another.

It all makes sense in my head, anyways.

So what should you expect with this one? Well, if mixtape #1 was a nonstop dance party at the club, mixtape #2 is the after party. It’s a little more mellow than the last one, definitely a lot more eclectic, but it still has plenty of good songs to shake your booty to, if that’s what you’re into.

Plus: More variety!

Love Kings of Leon? Not only do I have a remix of Use Somebody by RAC, but I also have a cover of Knocked Up by Lykke Li.

Looking for a dance remix of classical music? Why the fuck not? I’ve got a beautiful Röyksopp edit of Steve Reich’s Electric Counterpoint: III. Fast.

How about weird-ass South African hip-hop? If you’re not yet familiar with Die Antwoord, you’re about to be.

Do you wish I had more classic soul divas on my compilations? Now I’ve got Dinah Washington, Etta James and Sugar Pie DeSanto! Plus a new soul diva in the form of Kelis!

And I know what you’re saying. If only Ben put on a 8-bit cover of The Pixies’ Monkey Gone To Heaven this mix would be complete. You know what? I’ve got that too!

I’ve got another 2.4 hours of music covering 34 different songs, all waiting for you after you click that link. So click it! It’s good!  I promise!

Get it HERE.

As always, if you’re curious about any of the music on this compilation or just want to tell me what you like and what you don’t, let me know!

And stay tuned next time for a brand new mixtape that no one’s heard before!
