C’est Non Un Blog’s Top 20 Music Videos of 2012 (Part 2)

16. Jessie Ware – Wildest Moment

Sometimes the secret to making a great music video is to just let the song speak for itself. The video for “Wildest Moment” consists of nothing more than Jessie slowly turning in circles as she sings the song, and yet as simple as the concept is, the execution is mesmerizing. I could watch Jessie Ware sing all day, especially when it sounds this good. Jessie Ware was one of my most blogged about artists of 2012, and yet of all the videos she posted this year, this is the one that gives me the fondest memories.

15. HEARTSREVOLUTION – Hello Baby!

“Hello Baby!” was the first song I posted in 2012 and it was a perfect start to what turned out to be a pretty damn good year for music. Sadly the revolution promised by last year’s Occupy Wall Street movement never really came to pass, but we saw plenty of other positive signs, from the continuation of the Arab Spring to gay marriage becoming more widely accepted in our country (and legal in several new states, including my own) to the Republican Party’s self-implosion in this year’s presidential race. At least in a small way the counterculture seems to be coming back to America, which this video captures perfectly. This song and video give me hope that things are finally getting better in this “big, beautiful world” we live in.

14. Azealia Banks – 212 (feat. Lazy Jay)

Azealia Banks blew up huge in 2012, but none of that would have been possible if it hadn’t been for this video for “212”. When “212” hit the net it blew up like wildfire and you couldn’t call yourself a music blogger with any sense of self-respect if you didn’t post this video. It just came out of nowhere and caught everyone by surprise by just how damn catchy it was. I mean, you’ve got to love the juxtaposition of her big cheesy smile, schoolyard braids and Mickey Mouse sweater with raunchy lyrics like, “Now she wanna lick my plum in the evening / And fit that ton-tongue d-deep in / I guess that cunt getting eaten.” The song starts out with a crazy infectious dancehall beat and Azealia’s sick flow, and then just when you think it couldn’t get any better, hey, surprise, this girl can sing too. The video’s black and white photography looks gorgeous, and the tongue-in-cheek choreography and the perfect showcase for this fantastic song.

13. D E N A – Cash, Diamond Rings, Swimming Pools

“Cash, Diamond Rings, Swimming Pools” is the perfect jam for lonely country kids who dream of doing all the cool things they think that the city kids are doing. The song is a lot like the thrift store style that DENA rocks in the video. It’s taking outdated, tossed aside ideas and re-purposing them with a new sense of style to make something exciting and different. It’s taking the very unglamorous setting of a Sunday Swap Meet and adding so much of your own swag that the whole thing actually seems pretty awesome in comparison. It’s being able to laugh at yourself, and at the usual clichés of wealth-obsessed hip-hop. And on top of all of that, it’s just a really catchy summer jam for–you guessed it–chillin’ with your friends by the swimming pool.

C’est Non Un Blog’s Top 20 Music Videos of 2012 (Part 1)

For the second year in a row I’ve decided to sit down and share with you my favorite music videos of the last 365 days. 2012 turned out to be an amazingly fantastic year for new music, as evidence by the fact that the initial list I came up with for this project had well over 50 songs on it. Ideally I’d want this to be a Top Ten list, but I when I started whittling it down I just couldn’t narrow it down that far, so you’re going to get a Top 20 list instead. Twice as much work for me, but twice as much great music for y’all to enjoy. So since we’ve got a lot to get to, I’ll stop wasting time and get right to it.

20. Disclosure – Latch (feat. Sam Smith)

“Latch” is by far the sexiest song of the year. Nothing else came even remotely close to being as sexy as the chorus of this song. This baby-making music, pure and simple. If you’re trying to find a true test to see if the person you like is even remotely into you, throw this song on; because if you’re not making out by the end of the song, let’s face it, it’s never going to happen. The video isn’t anything truly extraordinary, but it does do an extremely effective job of conveying the general idea of the song, which is that if you put two people who are attracted to each other next to each other while this song is playing, they will be locking lips by the time the chorus hits. This song is all about the moment you discover that you’re really attracted to someone and the magic that happens with that realization. Every time I hear the song, it gives me goosebumps.

19. Nite Jewel – One Second Of Love

Nite Jewel’s “One Second Of Love” is one of those songs that’s grown on me and grown on me, so much so that I begin to wonder if the black magic being performed in the video might be having a little effect on me too. I just love this video. It could be a excerpt from some obscure English or Italian horror film from the 70’s, and in a year that saw so many great fan videos made from old films it’s saying a lot that they could recreate that same feeling today for this video. From the vintage lighting to the girl group choreography, this is a fantastically well put together video.

18. M.I.A. – Bad Girls

When this song first showed up on M.I.A.’s VickiLeekx mixtape it was immediately apparent that “Bad Girls” was one of her best songs yet, but it wasn’t until we saw this video that we all truly understood how badass this song really is. You can’t watch this video an not feel like a rock star. Shot in Morocco and featuring locals doing some crazy driving stunts, the video totally delivers on the exotic Arabian swagger that the song promises.

17. Twigs – Hide

I still know next to nothing about Twigs, but what I do know is that this video for “Hide” remains one of my all-time favorite surprise discoveries. The video is simple. There’s almost nothing to it. But its impact is so immediately clear that it can’t help but make a deep impression on you. Yes, the video is minimalist, but if they added anything else to it, it wouldn’t be as good. From the deep red background to the provocative flower placed over her genitals, this video screams sex. I’ve already talked about how sexy Disclosure’s “Latch” is, but this is a different kind of sexy. This is pure lust. Scratch what I said before, “Latch” isn’t the sexiest song of the year, “Hide” is. If “Latch” is the song you play to make your move on someone, “Hide” is the song you play later after you’ve torn each other’s clothes off and fallen into bed.

Jessie Ware – Sweet Talk

God, putting together my latest mixtape has been a nightmare. First there was just the act of putting the thing together into something I was happy with. Then I had to write it up, which took me hours of working away last night into the wee hours of the morning. Then I wake up this morning to discover that the link wasn’t working because for once Mediafire called me on Copyright Infringement. That’s never happened before. Even after changing the link LiveJournal was being a fickle bitch by not sharing those kind changes with y’all. It should all be fixed now, but if any of you are still having issues downloading it send me a message and I’ll get you a direct link.

After all that I need a break to relax, and what better way to relax then with the smooth R&B sounds of one of my favorite artists of 2012, Jessie Ware? This video features mum Jessie sending her lookalike daughter off to the studio to record a new song before playing it live before an audience. Now we know where Jessie gets all of her music: child labor! The video is super cute and as always with Jessie Ware, the song is amazing. If I listen to this a few more times I should lose my urge to murder someone at LiveJournal right now.

The Countdown To The End Of The Universe Mixtape

I know, I know. This mixtape has been a long time coming. To give you some sense of how long it’s been “almost” done, I was originally planning on this to be a Labor Day mixtape, then a Halloween one, then a Thanksgiving one and then, well, you get the idea. You’d think the next logical conclusion would be to look towards Christmas, but when I was going through some random pictures on my hard drive looking for something to use for an album cover I came across a vintage photo with the words “Countdown To The End Of The Universe” superimposed on it and finally, with the Mayan Apocalypse but a week away, I knew I had my theme. This is the music you should be listening to when Armageddon arrives. Or if The End doesn’t come, you’ve still got some good tunes to keep you occupied throughout the holidays.

Pick up the new mixtape here.

Curious, I Googled the phrase “Countdown To The End Of The Universe” to see if I could find a better quality version of the photo I wanted to use and I discovered that it was done by a Mark Richard Miller whose Flickr page actually has an album filled with dozens of different photos with this phrase printed on them. I uploaded some of my favorites to my blog’s Facebook page. Feel free to check it out and use your own favorite for your album cover.

The mixtape starts off with Therapies Son’s “Touching Down”, a song that seems to drift up beside you out of nowhere like a car gliding upon a dark and lonely road. I Googled the song to see if there was a music video to go along with it, and almost by fate I found a video that starts off with an image of the Beast on the Cross and contains psychedelic images of the universe. Is this fate or what?

I put a song on the mixtape by Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs that’s called “Tapes & Money”. Tell me that right there doesn’t have a connection to a certain mixtape to the end of the world?

I pulled inspiration for this mixtape from all over. I discovered SoCalled’s “Work With What You Got” playing over the end credits to one of my favorite diamond-in-the-rough movies of this year, ‘Goon’. If you haven’t seen that movie yet you should definitely check it out. Speaking of movies, Twin Shadow’s “Golden Light” reminds me a bit of ‘The Lost Boys’ every time I hear it. Anyone else hear that? Bent’s “Stay Out All Night” is probably the oldest song on the mixtape, released in 2006 on their ‘Intercept!’ album, and I included it because after all this time it still makes me smile. TV Girl’s “Don’t Say No” is actually from a unreleased rarities album they gave away a while ago for donating to their Kickstarter page to get them a tour van. Pretty sweet deal, if you ask me.

Tours’ “I Need U” was actually a last minute addition when I suddenly realized right before publication that I had put both Luminary Youth’s and Jay Salinger’s “Never Alone” on the mixtape, never realizing that Luminary Youth changed their name to Jay Salinger and then back to Luminary Youth again and somehow without noticing I had put the same song on the mixtape twice. As long as I’ve been looking at this mixtape and playing with it, I never noticed that before. Thank god I caught that one in time.

Well, that’s all folks.  Dig in.  If you haven’t already, “Like” my Facebook page for all the latest blog updates and if you get a chance let me know what you think of the new mixtape.

LiveJournal for some reason only wants to save the changes to my links when I’m looking at them and I’m sick of fighting with it, so just go to this link to download the mixtape: https://www.dropbox.com/sh/1iib1kzktq8dh07/MPJs8N6FKq/Countdown%20To%20The%20End%20Of%20The%20Universe%20Mixtape.rar

iamamiwhoami – goods

As you may remember, earlier this year I was quite obsessed with a string of videos that iamamiwhoami released one by one, which I dubbed the mop monster saga and was later revealed to be the contents of her debut album, ‘kin’. What you might not remember is that I actually never posted the final video of the series, “goods”, mainly because I really didn’t know what to make of it when I saw it. Every video that preceded it seems to have some sort of narrative thread or visual queue linking it to the video that came before, but for the life of me I couldn’t figure out what that was when I watched “goods” at that time. I think what threw me off the most was the complete tonal shift in the music. “kill” is such an amazingly sad, tragic song while “goods” is surprisingly upbeat, probably the most upbeat of the series, complete with disco lights and disco dancing at the end of the video. At that point I think I just over-thought everything since nothing seemed to match the earlier videos, and thus I didn’t really look at what was there, instead focusing on what wasn’t.

That feeling of confusion has stuck with me like a thorn in my side ever since I saw that video, constantly nagging at me that I never posted the video and thus I never completed my thesis on what I thought the whole thing meant. This week I finally tracked down a copy of ‘kin’ on CD (which still isn’t commercially available in the US, for some reason) and I was surprised to discover that it also contained a DVD of all of the music videos that played in one continuous mix. I came to two realizations when watching the DVD, one, that you should really watch these videos on a big screen, because they are beautiful. “good worker” in particular looked gorgeous on my flat screen tv. But second, and more importantly, I finally realized how “goods” fit into the whole thing.

The thing that confused me the most when I watched the video back when it was originally released was the outfit. What is up with that outfit? It doesn’t match anything she wears in any of the other videos. It didn’t dawn on me until I watched the video again that it looks a lot like a tile floor, which would make a lot of sense considering how many times I’ve referred to the mop monsters when talking about this series. I also completely missed the fact that in “kill” she’s closing a door to the white room seen in several of the videos and that the video ends on the other side of that door in blackness, a blackness that is omnipresent in “goods”. While oblivious to this before they both seem like pretty obvious and clear metaphors to me now. Call this my “duh” moment.

A lot of the mystery of the video comes from the fact that it takes place almost exclusively in a solid black room filled with haze without any other frame of reference. It isn’t even clear until about halfway through the video that she is in a room. It almost comes as a shock when she suddenly touches a wall you didn’t even know was there at the 2:20 mark. Where the hell did that come from? When we zoom out from a black box at the very end of the video it becomes obvious that she’s now trapped inside the box. Instead of fighting with the mop monsters or becoming one of them like she does in the other videos, she’s now become the tile floor designed for that mop, trapped in a life she does not want.

These are the first two verses of the song:

I come bearing legacy, that we caused jointly in our dawning land
I come with delivery, and I have left it in my mourning band

I bring you my history that I expect your tender arms around it
Give it love and think of me
These are the letters from a compound

If “kill” was about wanting to abort a pregnancy to avoid being trapped in a life of domestic servitude that she did not want, “goods” is the epilogue to the story where we find out she had the child and is now telling her child the story of how all of this came to be. It sounds like a cautionary tale to her daughter, that the daughter be careful not follow in the mother’s footsteps.

That’s just what I think, though. I highly recommend you click on the “mop monster” tag below and watch all the videos in sequence for yourself, and if you’ve got any different theories, I’d love to hear them.

Flight Facilities – Clair De Lune (feat. Christine Hoberg)

It seems like a million years pass in between the release of new Flight Facilities songs, but even with all that time going by the wait is always worth it every time a new song finally comes out. Each song they’ve released is a little different, but I think with “Clair De Lune” Flight Facilities have proven that they are the best producers out there. Each sound in their songs is placed with immaculate perfection and the songs, from the melody to the tone to the overall production, are flawlessly constructed. “Clair De Lune” is perfect music for headphones. Check out the skittery electronic sounds that pop up around the 2:30 mark that bounce around your head like moths around a flame, and the lush string arrangement that starts at the 4:45 mark. You just can’t find current music out there that on a purely subjective level sounds this good. You can hear right there in the song all of the time and effort they put into crafting these pop gems.

They also put out killer music videos, and “Clair De Lune” is no exception. I think the video perfectly captures the mood and tone of the song, both hopeful and yet full of despair, a feeling of holding on to something you love that realistically can’t last forever. It’s great stuff, and well worth the wait.

Empress Of – Champagne

New artist Empress Of is getting a lot of buzz right now and you’ll feel that that attention is definitely justified after listening to her track, “Champagne”. This song reminds me a lot of Class Actress, St. Vincent or even classic Cocteau Twins. It actually feels like it would fit right in with a lot of the early New Wave, left of the dial type stuff of the 80’s. The video of Empress Of eating a watermelon somehow manages to be both adorable and strangely unsettling all at the same time. I can’t wait to hear more from her.

Eyedress – Everything We Touch Turns Into Gold / Teen Spirits

It’s not often that I get a chance to write about music from the Philippines, and what’s more surprising is when that music isn’t anything like what you might have expected. If you closed your eyes I’d doubt you’d ever guess Eyedress is even from the Philippines, since their music sounds a lot like all the other hipster-ific indie pop coming out of New York City, Sydney or Sweden right now. “Everything We Touch Turns Into Gold” is quiet dream pop filled with gentle swirling electronic melodies while “Teen Spirits” drifts more towards more energetic 80’s synth soundscapes. Both videos are beautifully shot like a fashion shoot out of Vogue or Nylon and provide the perfect visual accompaniment to these beautiful tracks.

HEARTSREVOLUTION – Not That Hard To Explain

Just in time for the election HEARTSREVOLUTION have come out with a new track that combines a pretty memorable Strokes riff with that beat from “Hey, Mickey you’re so fine, you’re so fine you blow my mind…” As always HEARTSREVOLUTION deliver a pretty memorable, bouncy, and fun track.
