Britney Spears – Work Bitch

work bitch work bitch2

I was never a Britney fan back when she was at the height of her popularity, but I have been totally loving all of her music post-2007 meltdown. Of course I love that she’s embraced these huge catchy European club beats (I was actually a little shocked to discover that “Work Bitch” was produced by will.i.am) but her songs also seem a little more tongue-in-cheek now with the music in general feeling a lot more fun and lively. You have to be a real cynical cranky-ass bastard to not love “Work Bitch”.  This song embodies what pop music is all about, and if you start complaining about how stupid it is then you’re really missing the point.  15 years after “…Baby One More Time” Britney’s back, bitch, and she’s better than ever.

BTW, is it just me, or does it look like Britney’s had some work done recently?

Baddy Paris and Rufus Starlight – We Are Brothers (A Best Man Song)

brother3

Normally when your brother tells you that he’s getting married you throw him a kickin’ bachelor’s party or you make up some funny toast for the reception about all the trouble he used to get into when you were kids.  What’s not as common is to create an 80’s-inspired synth heavy music video with German undertones pleading with him not to leave you for his bride. This video for “We Are Brothers” went viral earlier this week and for good reason.  Not only is the video hilarious, but the song is actually pretty damn amazing. I’ve been jamming to it all week.  Do yourself a favor and watch this video immediately.

Ryan Hemsworth – Against A Wall (feat. Lofty305)

Ryan Hemsworth is one of the most exciting up-and-coming producers working right now and he finally has a new full length album coming out on October 22nd called ‘Guilt Trips’. This is absolutely something I’m looking forward to hearing and if “Against A Wall” is any indication of what we can expect, it should be a pretty fantastic album.

The video for “Against A Wall” was directed by Paul Labonte, who you might remember also did an amazing black and white video for Azealia Banks’ “212”.  I’m a huge fan of his lush black and white cinematography, for although nothing especially flashy happens in this video it still looks gorgeous.  I love how sometimes sapping the color out of an image can add a whole new life to it that wasn’t previously there.

King Krule – Border Line

Krul

Now let’s slow things down a little bit–but still keep up all that positive energy–with David Dean Burkhart’s newest video for King Krule’s “Border Line”, off of his debut album, ‘6 Feet Beneath The Moon’.  Almost ingeniously Burkart heard that plucky rhythm from the guitar and thought about dance numbers from classic musicals and that’s wonderful, because the two go together like chocolate and peanut butter, specifically (for me) Fred Astaire’s graceful footsteps that always seem to make him appear to be floating and just an inch above the ground.  As always Burkhart’s editing skills are impeccable, which adds an extra layer of grace and casual perfection to the dancing in the video.  You know he’s doing his job right when it feels like they did the dancing for the song and not the other way around.

I love and miss classic Hollywood musicals, and I think the main reason more people don’t watch them nowadays is because the music in them can feel especially dated.  Put something contemporary in them like this wonderful track from King Krule and you might introduce a whole new generation to this magnificent and joyful art form.

Chase & Status – Count On Me (feat. Moko)

Chase

It can be really hard to get back into the habit of writing on a regular basis, especially if you had just taken a week off and came back to a ginormous backlog of fall TV and new music. It can be a little exhausting and overwhelming. Sometimes just what you need is a little pick me up to kick you in the butt and get those creative juices flowing.  “Count On Me” is that perfect kind of Hi-NRG track I needed to get the blood pumping and my thoughts flowing.  And I’m betting that in no time at all you’re going to bouncing up and down with me, spinning your imaginary glo-sticks around your head, wishing you had the real thing. This song is a definite party starter.

Taylor Swift – a (robot) Love Story (FutureCop! & Ham$tar* Remix)

Swift

And we’re back!

All apologies for not putting together a new post sooner, but I didn’t realize how much of a backlog of new potential material that I’d coming back to after a week off.  Apparently a lot can happen in a week.  If you’d like a little insight into how much music I (attempt to) sort through every week for this blog, the morning after I arrived back in Seattle I scrolled through the last week of Facebook posts, pulling out any new music posts I could find and bookmarking them. The whole process took about five hours of my life (no joke) and I ended up with around 100 bookmarks to go through later.  Yeah, a hundred.  And I keep finding new stuff! With all of that, plus the new TV season starting, I expect it’s going to take me a long time before I’m fully back on track.

While I try to make sense of this mess I created for myself in an attempt to find some new favorite songs, I’ll leave you with this FutureCop! remix that I’ve probably listened to about a billion times on-and-off the last few days.  Although I can’t say Taylor Swift’s music is exactly my flavor, you’ve got to admit the girl can write some catchy songs.  And if you combine that talent with the amazing chopped and screwed remixing talents of FutureCop! and Ham$tar*, well, let’s just say that you’re in for a good time.

Make sure you download a free mp3 of the track from their SoundCloud page while it’s still available there for free!

Yeah.

Yeah.

Napoleon – Foolish Pride

Foolish Pride

C’est Non Un Blog is going to take a brief break from posting for the next week, but don’t worry.  I’ll be back soon with more new music, among other things.  While I’m gone you can enjoy this fantastically fun David Dean Burkhart video for Napoleon’s “Foolish Pride”.

Napoleon is the solo project of Simon Mills of Bent, one of my most favorite bands of all time. You can pick up his second album, ‘Magpies’ on his Bandcamp page.

Daft Punk – Lose Yourself to Dance

daft-punk-pharrell-nile-rodgers-to-yourself-to-dance-video

Finally!  After a much too long wait we finally get a full length music video for a song off of Daft Punk’s phenomenal new album, ‘Random Access Memories’.  All that was released for song of the summer “Get Lucky” was a minute long promo video for the new album that appeared on SNL.  Then they showed another one minute long promo video for this video during their disappointingly underwhelming VMA appearance.  When that one minute promo appeared online I was sure they weren’t going to do anything full length, and my heart sunk.  Then this video appeared online today and all was right in the world again.

I’m not going to say much about the song itself.  If you haven’t listened to ‘Random Access Memories’ a million times already you’re crazy, because it is easily one of the best albums of the year, if not decade.  Need further proof?  Well, you can start by watching this video.

FKA Twigs – Papi Pacify

FKA Twigs

It’s getting to the point where I’m just as excited to get a new notification email from FKA Twigs (formerly Twigs) as I am one from iamamiwhoami.  This video is a little bit on the weird side (Why does that guy keep putting his fingers in her mouth?) but it’s also a gorgeous showcase for black and white photography and .gif influenced editing.  And that song, oh that song. There’s something really mysterious and sensual, yet soulful about her style.  Every time you hear one of her songs you immediately want to hear ten more. Sadly, she’s released only 8 songs so far, 4 from her ‘EP’ and 4 more (including “Papi Pacify”) from ‘EP2’, out on the 17th.

Blood Diamonds – Barcode (feat. Dominic Lord)

blood diamonds

Blood Diamonds is one of my favorite producers right now and a big part of why I love him so much (aside from the fact that he’s best buddies with Grimes) is because I can hear all of his influences in his tracks, because they were my influences 10-15 years ago too.  If I were talented enough to make my own music it would probably sound a lot like Blood Diamonds’ stuff.  There’s lots of obvious throwbacks from soundtracks of the JRPGs of the SNES era, and a lot of the skittery beats and chopped up vocals actually remind me of BT’s ‘Movement In Still Life’ from back in the day.  Songs like “Barcode” produce a huge nostalgia endorphin rush for me in the pleasure center of my brain, because it reminds me so much of my earliest experiences with electronic music.  He gets what it is to be a 90’s kid who was into EDM before EDM became some shitty sellout sound.
