Now let’s slow things down a little bit–but still keep up all that positive energy–with David Dean Burkhart’s newest video for King Krule’s “Border Line”, off of his debut album, ‘6 Feet Beneath The Moon’. Almost ingeniously Burkart heard that plucky rhythm from the guitar and thought about dance numbers from classic musicals and that’s wonderful, because the two go together like chocolate and peanut butter, specifically (for me) Fred Astaire’s graceful footsteps that always seem to make him appear to be floating and just an inch above the ground. As always Burkhart’s editing skills are impeccable, which adds an extra layer of grace and casual perfection to the dancing in the video. You know he’s doing his job right when it feels like they did the dancing for the song and not the other way around.
I love and miss classic Hollywood musicals, and I think the main reason more people don’t watch them nowadays is because the music in them can feel especially dated. Put something contemporary in them like this wonderful track from King Krule and you might introduce a whole new generation to this magnificent and joyful art form.
