The Drums are a surf pop new wave band that sound like they should be British, or at least from some beach town in Australia, but are actually from Brooklyn, NY. I love this video and this song, both of which wouldn’t feel even slightly out of place on early MTV. They say their self titled album is out now in the US, but Easy Street begs to differ. Either way, enjoy:
The amount of dream pop that is exploding onto the internet right now is astounding, and I could not be happier. I’ve never found more new bands that I loved the sound of in such a short amount of time before. I just hope they all make it and don’t fade into obscurity (which they probably, unfortunately, will.)
Here’s my latest find from Australia: Gypsy and the Cat. Could this not be better summer music?
One of the greatest things to have come out of the internet revolution is the ability for anyone anywhere with some free time and little creativity to put their vision out there for everyone to see. For the first time in human history, any person with a computer can experiment with new media and almost instantly have a huge audience available to them. Andy Worhol has never been more accurate with his 15 minutes of fame quote. Of course as we also all know, 99.9% of what people put out there is crap, but that .1% is more than enough to make a real difference.
What is all of this leading up to? Fan vids! Since most fan vids usually use copyrighted media they can’t be shown for commercial use, but that almost doesn’t even matter in this age of YouTube. A lot of times they are even better than the officially produced music videos, like this video for Delorean’s Simple Graces.
Someone found some cheesy early 90’s footage of what looks like a latin pool party concert for a local TV station and edited it to match up with this song. Oddly enough it seems to fit the music perfectly, so much so that someone, ironically named Farsighted27, actually commented on YouTube: “They look much different than they did in my mind,” even though it obviously says that this is an unofficial music video.
Delorean is one of my favorite new discoveries of 2010, so I hope you get as much of a kick out of this video as I did.
Alrighty, here’s two videos I had to share that seem to defy explanation. And we like them that way.
What happens when bodybuilders get into a turf war with trannies and it’s broken up by gangbangers with magic blue pixie dust? Well, you’ll just have to watch the new video to Foals’ Miami to find out.
If that wasn’t weird enough for you, watch as a boy with a beard finally fulfills one of his childhood dreams in Miike Snow’s The Rabbit.
I’m now convinced that Jesus is coming back to get his hands on a 2 Live Crew album. Anyone else have a better interpretation of this video???
Finally, we have visual proof that listening to Kylie does in fact make you want to take off all of your clothes, especially if you just happen to be an underwear model. What is unexpected is the fact that if you get enough underwear models together in the same place, Kyle can make herself into a Akira-like, city-crushing monster made of people. I totally expected Kanada to drive up on his motorcycle at the end of the video yelling, “TETSUOOOOO!!!!!”
Blah, Blah, Blah…I luv Kylie. Here’s her new single All The Lovers, off her much anticipated (by me) new album, Aphrodite, out July 6.
If you partied hard this Memorial Day weekend and you just got home from your first day at work, I’m guessing you’re probably feeling pretty tired right now. So why not chill things out with some new indie music that will relax your soul and is guaranteed not to add to that headache you’re now rockin’.
Memoryhouse is a chillout duo from Ontario, Canada who kind of sound like She & Him if Zooey Deschanel was writing music while lying on her back in a field of daffodils while REALLY stoned. Best of all, if you like this song then you can download it and three others that are on their first EP that they’re giving away for free on their MySpace page! Yay for free music!
If you’ve been digging the 80’s dream-pop stuff that I’ve been posting lately, then you’re going to love Pearl Fiction (if not, then sorry!) Pearl Fiction is Pearl of the disbanded Swedish synthpop-act Zeigeist, who were their own kind of awesome. I’m sad that they’re not together anymore, but glad that at least its members are still making music.
Pearl Fiction’s first single was released today and it’s joined by a weird, beautiful, freaky and just I-can’t-explain-it video. It’s cute and innocent, and yet at the same time probably NSFW. Enjoy the weirdness:
Bonus video! Here’s a really pretty live version of Zeigeist’s Tar Heart. This is very safe for work.
Because I know there is a lot of interest from you guys in Trent Reznor’s new side project, How To Destroy Angels, I’ve got some exciting news for you: Trent’s giving away the EP for free! Sign up for the new 6-track EP here to get a free download of one song, The Believers, and you’ll get an email on June 1st from which you can download the rest of the EP absolutely free! Yay! The EP will also be available to buy at record stores the following week.
ceo is the new solo project from Eric Berglund, half of The Tough Alliance, who are pretty cool in their own right. Although this song reminds me quite a bit of the music from Sweden’s Labrador label (it’s got to be those dreamy, filtered, fuzzed out vocals), it’s actually from Australia’s equally epic Modular label (home of Cut Copy, The Presets and Ladyhawke, to name a few). You’ve got to love the beat on this one.
While there have been release dates for Sir Lucious Leftfoot: The Son of Chico Dusty before, we finally have good reason to believe that Big Boi’s new solo album is finally coming out on July 6th. We’ve been burned before though, so what makes this time different?
Well, for one, Big Boi’s label, Def Jam, has really started to increase the promotional push for Sir Lucious. And then we have the official video for the first single, Shutterbug, which came out today. It’s a crazy video with neon jumpsuits, sneaker mountains, puppets with vocoders and a swimsuit clad woman holding Big Boi’s disembodied head. That and a killer track of electro-funk as weird and unique as the visuals that makes me wish Andre were around to make this a proper OutKast album. Oh well. Until that miracle becomes a reality, we have this to tide us over. This is officially one of my most anticipated albums of the summer.
