Hypnolove – Winter In The Sun (Pilooski Edit)

Winter Winter1 Winter2This video for Hypnolove’s “Winter In The Sun” is a delightful homage to tropical telenovelas and educational erotic films of the 70’s, but it contains quite a bit of sex and nudity so it should be emphatically stated before we get too far into things that this video is absolutely NOT safe for work. The images above were the only three decent screen grabs I could get out of the video without giving this post an R-rating so don’t say you weren’t warned.

Now that we’ve got that necessary disclaimer out of the way I hope you still take the time to watch this because it’s one of the best videos that I’ve seen in a long time. A fun melodrama inspired by European erotic films of 70’s, the story follows one couple’s trysts inspired by a wife finding a condom hidden in her husband’s coat pocket. The condom isn’t actually his, but its discovery leads her to believe he’s having an affair (which he is) and inspires her to have one of her own. The analogue synth wash and tropical disco beats of Pilooski’s edit of the song perfectly compliment this comedy of errors with its fun and sexy vibes and you can pick up a copy of the song, along with the rest of their new album, Ghost Carnival, here.

Midnight Juggernauts – Systematic

Systematic Systematic1 Systematic2

While the internet is already comprised of 90% cat videos, leaving little out there that has yet to be experienced, this new video for Midnight Juggernauts’ “Systematic” is still probably the most psychedelic cat video you’ve ever seen. The bass and drum parts, the distorted vocals, as well as the overall trippy vibe of the track are all very reminiscent of The Beatles’ groundbreaking track from Revolver, “Tomorrow Never Knows“.

Delorean – Unhold (feat. Caroline Polachek) of Chairlift

Unhold1 Unhold2 Unhold3What happens when you add the soaring vocals of Chairlift’s Caroline Polachek with the sound of Spain’s hottest band, Delorean? Well, nothing bad, that’s for damn sure. The video plays with the concept of perspective, an idea borrowed from the unique sculptures you can see in the background of two of the photos above, and everything in the video twists and stretches based on the camera’s perspective, much like how Caroline’s vocals seem to elongate and warp her vowel sounds across several octaves.

SZA – Ice Moon

Ice Moon Ice Moon1 Ice Moon2Wow.

This track is drop dead gorgeous. The track’s Indian influence gives the song a mystical, spiritual feeling–the highlight being the bells, which remind me of “Schala’s Theme” from the Chrono Trigger soundtrack–while the minimalist hip-hop beat gives the song some modern R&B relevance. Meanwhile, the warm, fuzzy look of the video combined with the picturesque woodland photography perfectly compliments the song’s otherworldly vibe. I want to wrap myself up in this song like a warm blanket on a cold winter’s day.

Lily Allen – Hard Out Here

Hard Out Here Hard Out Here3 Hard Out Here4 Hard Out Here5 Hard Out Here6

Lily Allen had decided to call it quits after two albums and leave the music industry to have two kids and start her family, but like pretty much everyone else who’s “retired” the music industry before their hitting their golden years Lily had to come back to make some more sweet, sweet music and man, has she been bottling up a whole lot of excess energy in her off time.

“Hard Out Here” is a rather broad criticism of the current state of popular music. The song takes cracks at all variety of targets, both general and specific, from the objectification of woman in pretty much every hip-hop video ever made to current lightning rods like Miley Cyrus’ twerking, Britney Spears’ use of the word “bitch” in “Work Bitch” and just about everything in Robin Thicke’s “Blurred Lines” videos. This video is satire of the highest order, from the middle-aged male record executive teaching her how to twerk, to the ridiculously over auto-tuned chorus, to the “Blurred Lines”-esque “Lily Allen Has A Baggy Pussy” balloons and the obscenely bizarre use of the Beats Pill speaker that can be found in both the “Work Bitch” and “Blurred Lines” videos. Lily’s making a pretty powerful statement by working within the system while simultaneously ripping it to pieces, and somehow she seems to be having a blast while doing it. Glad to have you back, Lily.

Laura Groves – Pale Shadows

Pale Shadows Pale Shadows1London-based Laura Groves just released this video for “Pale Shadows” that knocked me out when I first heard it. Her voice is so warm and comforting, the perfect sort of soothing melody you need right now to get yourself through yet another cold, grey Fall day. It’s easy to get lost in this song’s simple beat and gentle guitars and not ever want to take it off repeat.

You can pick “Pale Shadows” up on her Thinking About Thinking EP.

Saint Pepsi – Unhappy / Cherry Pepsi

Unhappy Unhappy2

I’m a Pepsi guy. To me, Coke is bitter swill best used for cleaning car engines and dissolving teeth long forgotten by the Tooth Fairy while Pepsi is a sweet, bubbly ambrosia sent to us from the gods. None of the above mentioned opinions have anything to do with the band I’m about to write about, aside from the fact that I probably like Saint Pepsi’s music as much as I like drinking Pepsi.

Don’t let the name fool you; listening to “Unhappy” is anything but a miserable experience. The looped guitar sample that runs throughout the track is brightened up through fun glitterball filters to give the song an ear pleasing bouncy exuberance. The video is a meet-cute story of two young people flirting at a party and falling in love. There’s only a hint of unhappiness at the very end, but then again I might only be reading into that because of the name of the track.

Cherry Pepsi Cherry Pepsi1

David Dean Burkhart’s “Cherry Pepsi” hits upon all of its influences a bit more on the nose, composed entirely of tons of footage from classic 90’s Pepsi commercials, but it’s still a fantastic little piece of nostalgia. “Cherry Pepsi’s” sound instantly matches up with your memories of all of those commercials as if it were actually originally a jingle for one of these commercials and you’ve just long since forgotten that it existed. I like that Saint Pepsi describes their own style as “liquid disco” because it’s a perfect metaphor for what you’re about to hear.

Deptford Goth – Bloody Lip

Bloody Lip Bloody Lip1Deptford Goth excels at creating sparse, delicate songs that manage to come off just as exciting as they are soothing. The video for “Bloody Lip” shares the austere simplicity of the song, featuring an older bearded man lip-syncing to the song with minimal editing. I’d say more but this song’s gentle melody has lulled me into a blissful coma and I’d rather not wake back up.

“Bloody Lip” is taken off of Deptford Goth’s debut album, Life After Defo.

Eyedress – Nature Trips

Nature Trips Nature Trips2

Philippines-based producer Eyedress has been incredibly prolific this year and while his latest single, “Nature Trips”, has caught some flack for its pretty obvious Chromatics influences, it still manages to pack a heck of a punch all on its own.  I’ll warn you ahead of time, the video is startlingly dark with more than a few surprise murders, but its washed out nighttime visuals go perfectly with the spooky atmosphere of the song.

Disclosure – You & Me (Flume remix) (feat. Eliza Doolittle)

You me You me2

Sometimes simplicity for simplicity’s sake is the best policy.  Flume has stripped Disclosure’s original track of “You & Me” down to a single sample from the chorus and then slowed it down and sexed it up with lush layered strings and a basic beat. The video is also appropriately stripped down (in both the literal and figurative sense), with the only footage being that of a young couple making out. Disclosure’s had great success with sexy beats and people making out in the past (if you don’t remember, go re-watch “Latch”, number 20 on my Top 20 Music Videos of 2012). That same formula works wonders yet again with this music video:

Compare the Flume remix to the original track, a 2-step garage banger featuring the vocals of Eliza Doolittle, which was already a great song but now seems boring in comparison:
