Shine 2009

Finnish duo Shine 2009 just put out a new 4-track EP entitled Associates, filled with beautiful Balearic pop like “Higher” and “New Rules”, included below. “Higher” has footage from what looks like a 60’s Scandinavian art house film, which fits the music perfectly.

Even though the audio quality in this footage from a radio show performance they did for “New Rules” isn’t quite as good as the regular video, I chose to post the radio show version because it’s a lot more interesting to watch than the other one, which is basically just five minutes of running water. I hope you like it.

Mark Ronson & The Business INTL – The Bike Song

In keeping with the retro Japanese/French TV vibe of his last video, this time Mark Ronson crafts with Spank Rock a groovy tune about picking up cute micro mini wearing French girls on your bicycle.  I can’t wait to get my hands on the new album, Record Collection, on September 28th.

The Drums – Down By The Water

The Drums are definitely one of my favorite new artists of 2010. Their self-titled debut (which came out this week) is fantastic. “Down By The Water” has the feeling of a pre-Beatles pop-rock/soul song, and the video has a black-and-white Ed Sullivan Show vibe to match (discounting the fact that their wardrobe seems to be borrowed from Joy Division’s Ian Curtis).

Twin Shadow

Twin Shadow is a great discovery. I think it has great crossover potential, as it’s dreamwave pop that also has a lot of punk and rock in it. The lead singer has a voice that’s a cross between Richard Hawley and The Smiths’ Morrissey. I think it’s catchy as hell.

You’re going to be totally sold after listening to “Slow.” Great anthemic chorus, epic guitar work reminiscent of Mutemath and synths similar to Cut Copy. It’s very new-again New Wave. The video appears to be a long lost dating video from the 80’s, but that’s actually the lead singer talking/playing the drums. Enjoy.

For your bonus viewing pleasure, her’s “Castles In The Snow.”

The full length album, Forget, is out now on MP3, and will be out on a physical disc 9/28.

Robyn – Hyperballad

Robyn is really hot right now and Björk is, well, Björk, probably one of my top five favorite artists of all time. So it was a real pleasure to see Robyn cover one of my favorite Björk songs, “Hyperballad”, for the 2010 Polar Music Prize ceremony in which Björk was honored. It’s a pretty faithful cover, with just enough Robyn thrown in to make it unique. It’s a really great performance:

You can get the MP3 of this performance on Stereogum, as well as a 12 track Post tribute Stereogum put together, including covers by artists such as El Guincho, No Age, Xiu Xiu, Liars and the Dirty Projectors, among others.

And as an added bonus, here is a really sweet cover of “Human Behavior” by Wildbirds & Peacedrums at the same Polar Music Prize ceremony:

Great 90’s Music Videos (That I’ve Never Seen Before Today)

Some of you may remember that I’m not exactly the biggest fan of 90’s music, but maybe–just maybe–it’s because I never had cable growing up and therefore never had a MTV in my life where they actually played music videos from time to time. In high school I always felt out of the loop of the cultural discussion because I had no idea what people were talking about when they were talking about the newest videos. Everything I’ve seen from this time period happened years later, either from the Directors Series DVDs, YouTube, or VH1 Best Of specials.

Today I stumbled across the fact that Pitchfork has gone 90’s crazy and my curiosity got the better of me. As I love Best Of lists, I was instantly sucked into their Top 50 Videos of the decade list, and discovered a few gems I’d never seen before that I thought I’d share with you fine folks.

Let’s start things off with a Yo La Tengo song, "Sugarcube". I’ve never been a Yo La Tengo fan (I’m not even sure I could recognize a single song of theirs) but fan or not, you’ve got to love this hilarious video, where music executives tell them their indie/alternative style sucks and they need to go to rock school (predating the School Of Rock, staring Jack Black). Got to love the David Cross, Bob Odenkirk, and John Ennis cameos. I want to go to rock school, dammit. If you’ve never seen this before, enjoy:

No, I’ve never seen Smashing Pumpkins’ "1979" before. Sue me. No cable, remember? There is still a certain nostalgia to this song for me though, a mixed bag of joy and sadness, just like real nostalgia, really. Solid video though:

Foo Fighter’s "Big Me" was never my favorite song, but this ode to the then new Mentos commercials is pretty clever. It kind of pre-dates the internet meme thing you see everywhere today.

Pavement’s "Cut Your Hair" is another pretty hilarious video, where each band member goes up to get his hair cut at a barber shop and they do some random gag. Fun and goofy, yet casual, just like the song.

Next up is Ol’ Dirty Bastard’s "Baby, I Got Your Money" featuring Kelis. Here ODB and Kelis are intercut with footage from Dolemite, to give everything a fun blacksploitation feel. This video is very pimp. Rest in peace, Big Baby Jesus.

Finally, I found Beck’s trippy video for Sexx Laws, with a cameo by none other than Jack Black! Let the weirdness ensue!

Gold Panda – Snow and Taxis

Today I opened my email to see a message from Gold Panda announcing that their new album, Lucky Shiner, came out today, and then I went to my favorite blog, Disco Naïveté, and noticed that they had a new music video up for the single, "Snow and Taxis". I’ve quickly become a big fan of Gold Panda (I put their song "You" on my last mixtape) and I’m really excited about this new album. While I haven’t yet found the album to download (oh, I’ll find you soon enough!) you can stream it here.

I have watched the video though, and while I’m not quite moved by its beautiful images, I do like the song. It actually does make me think of snow, with the ringing bells, and taxis, with its frenetic pace reminding me of taking a taxi in the city in wintertime, making me wish the video was a little more on the nose.

Kylie Minogue – Get Outta My Way

Kylie’s got a brand new video out, and at first glance I thought she was getting a little sloppy, using imagery she’s already used in previous videos. But then I remembered how in her performance on America’s Got Talent (yes, I taped it just to watch Kylie) she actually had clips from her various other videos playing behind her and I realized that this was what she was actually going for. She’s doing an homage to her own awesome videos with this new fantastic single.

Unfortunately they’re not allowing embedding right now, but you can check it out at this link and see for yourself how many different video references you can pick up on.

Here’s the America’s Got Talent clip, just for reference:

I ❤ Kylie.

Miles Fisher – This Must Be The Place

I’ve been holding onto this one for a while. Miles Fisher does pretty decent version of The Talking Head’s “This Must Be The Place” (my favorite Talking Heads song) with a dead-on video spoofing American Psycho. It’s so spot on you’d think this was a promotional video for the film when it came out (although the video and song are all new). Enjoy!

Fan Death – Womb Of Dreams

Fan Death’s full length debut Womb of Dreams has finally leaked onto the internet and I have to say, it is AWESOME. They are probably my favorite artists of 2010 right now. I’ve had a massive love affair with them for almost a year (as you can see here and here) and I’m so happy there is finally a full length to go along with the buzz.  Ya’ll should pick this shizznit up.

[BTW, does anyone know an easy way to just search for keywords in your own journal, and not everyone’s?  Other than searching your tags (which I never use) I have no idea how to easy search my own blog for a post I’m looking for.]
