La Sera – Never Come Around

Here’s another video I recently rediscovered that I had wanted to post last year, but for one reason or another I never got to writing about it. This has all the elements of a great video; simple, yet compelling narrative, surprising humor, memorability. There’s a great juxtaposition between the dream pop/surf rock sound of the song to the subject matter of the video. It’s a catchy little number and a fantastic low budget video.

There is a bit of gore in this one, so you shouldn’t watch if you are faint of heart. And it goes without saying that it is probably NSFW too.

El Guincho – Bombay

This is one of my very favorite songs/videos from last year (as can already be seen by the fact that I included it on my latest mixtape). The song is so good that I’m not entirely sure why I haven’t posted the video for it before now. It’s extremely creative and beautiful, with lot of humor and clever editing. I love the look of the cinematography (is it shot on Super 8?) that totally reminds me of the cheap-o grindhouse films or home videos of the 70’s, while still having a really crisp, clean look to it.  It’s so beautiful that you could basically take a screen shot of almost any frame and make a pretty cool album cover for yourself.  This is a lot of fun, so you should definitely check it out.

BTW, there’s plenty of nudity in this, so it’s definitely NSFW.

Loud (Rihanna continued…)

Speaking of Rihanna’s Loud, have you heard this album yet? It kind of looked like she was on her way out after the whole Chris Brown debacle and her extremely dark (and not that great) last album, Rated R, but she somehow was able to turn it all around and put out her catchiest album yet. It’s pop, it’s dance music, and it’s a hellova lot a fun.

The prettiest song by far is “What’s My Name” featuring Drake. The tempo is somewhere between club thumper and slow dance territory, with a little bit of her Caribbean roots peaking through the chorus.

Her newest single is “S&M”. The video is a little too Lady Gaga meets 90’s alternative music video for my taste, but it’s still a pretty catchy song.

Probably my favorite song on the album though is “Only Girl (In The World)”. Great club track.

If you like that and you like Glee-style a capella, you should really check out this video by Mike Thompkins. Not only is it pretty amazing how he does all the musical parts with this voice, but he also somehow got a guest verse from Shad, probably one of the coolest underground MC’s out there today. Check this out:

The Divas Of Late Night (SNL continued…)

Nicki Minaj was a pretty good sport last week. Not only did she play two songs and do The Creep in the digital short, but she also managed to show up for a sketch as well. And what a sketch it was. The Bride of Blackenstein in my opinion is probably the funniest SNL sketch in years. Minaj is so good in this I could almost see her as this new millennium’s Pam Grier.

Another good sport is Rihanna, who recently reprised her role in the Shy Ronnie sketch, “Ronnie and Clyde”.

I was initially excited to see that Rihanna included this song on the deluxe edition of her Loud album, only to be disappointed to find out that they chopped the hell out of this song to get rid of all the Shy Ronnie parts. Unsurprisingly it’s not nearly as good. Oh well, maybe it’ll be on the new Lonely Island disc.

SNL Digital Shorts

The beginning of this season of SNL was pretty horrible. In fact, there hadn’t been even been a good digital short in a long while. While I think “Like A Boss” and “Boombox” are fantastic songs, the videos never really did measure up. Things finally seemed to turn around though with “I Just Had Sex.” In fact I think this was probably the most surprisingly funny and fresh short/song they’ve done since “I’m On A Boat”.

The next video isn’t a music video (although it does remind me a lot of People Getting Punched Right Before Eating) but it does have Pee-Wee Herman and Anderson Cooper!

Last week gave us “The Creep” with Nicki Minaj and John Waters. Honestly as good as everything is, the best part about this video is the fact that it was the first place I noticed that Lonely Island has a new album coming out this spring. Sweet!

The Miracles Club – Church Song

Speaking of awesomely awful music videos, this great new track from Portland Oregon’s The Miracles Club brings back the feelings of an early 90’s Soul Train dance party. Come for the horribly dated fashion, stay for the dancing goat!

Zlad! – Elektronik, Supersonik

I went home on vacation for Christmas and it’s fair to say that when I got back I was kind of out of the regular posting rhythm. So to get back into the swing of things, I present to you the world’s worst music video. And by worst I of course mean best. Prepare to have your mind blown.

Edit: In making this post I rediscovered an old classic I’m not sure I’ve shared here before, but it’s equally awesome; Danny Ja Armi’s ‘I Wanna Love You Tender’.

The Winter Wonderland Mixtape For Headphones

It’s been a long time coming, but my newest mixtape is finally ready! Officially I started working on this mix the second after I finished the last one, Lazy Mountains, but a variety of different factors kept me from releasing it until now. Not only was I getting the feeling that I might be releasing new mixtapes too frequently but I also never felt great about how the tracks I had chosen for this one worked together. I’ve spent more time tinkering with this mixtape than all of the others combined, adjusting song placement and adding/dropping songs for maximum cohesion. I’m actually really happy with how the end result turned out and I hope you enjoy it too. You can download it here.

As time went on and summer turned into fall and fall into winter, I found that a lot of the musical themes I kept coming back to felt very wintery in nature. There’s that crisp feeling of cold winter air and a haunting quality of a dark winter night, but all the songs also have a warmth and joyful feeling attached to them that’s associated with the season. When I figured out my theme the present tracklisting you’ll find here just came together for me.

I’ve downloaded a lot of new music this year and I’ve discovered a lot of great gems. This mix really showcases some of 2010’s best of the best for me. And it also just happens to be some great headphone music.

Highlights include:

The oddest entry to this mixtape is its first track, Riz Ortolani’s main theme for Cannibal Holocaust. There is just something so beautiful about the movie’s soundtrack that helps make the film more than just another Italian cannibal flick. This song has stuck with me longer than any of the film’s horrifying images.

Restless People’s ‘Days Of Our Lives’ may sound familiar to anyone who remembers the video for Underworld’s ‘Scribble’ that I gushed over this summer. The melodies are nearly identical in both and I might have thought that somebody ripped someone else off if the songs hadn’t come out within a week or two of each other. I love both songs, but I’ll leave it up to you to decide which is better.

The Knocks’ ‘Something I Can Dance To’ has one of the most infectious dance floor hooks I’ve heard in a long time. In fact I had a hard time putting just one Knocks track on this mix. Check these guys out. I think they might become uber-producers in the future.

There’s some great remixes on here. Grum takes Marina & The Diamond’s already fantastic ‘Oh No’ and makes it even better. Oli Chang gives the same cinematic remix treatment to M.I.A.’s ‘XXXO’ that he previously did to Beyonce’s ‘Naughty Girl’. Fred Falke somehow turns indie darling Grizzly Bear’s ‘Two Weeks’ into a really upbeat, happy dance track. And just try not to get swept away by CFCF’s remix of Owen Pallett’s ‘Lewis Takes Off His Shirt’. It’ll give you goose bumps.

This mixtape has so much good stuff on it that I’m going to stop writing about it and let you start listening to it.

And as an added treat, after the regular mixtape has ended with a excellent Fear of Tigers remake of Orbital’s ‘Calling Your Name’ I added a little 5-track Christmas EP to get you all into the holiday spirit. I normally hate Christmas music. Hearing those same “classics” play over and over and over everywhere you go drives me insane, and any “new” Christmas music that comes out is really just a schlocky remake of the old stuff.

Very little Christmas music sounds like stuff I would actually listen to any other time of year, which is why I was extremely surprised to recently find 5 brand new Christmas songs by contemporary bands that you would expect to see on this blog anyway. All the songs have come out within the last month, the highlight of which (to me anyway) is Summer Camp’s pitch perfect cover of the Waitresses’ ‘Christmas Wrapping’. My all-time favorite Christmas song is covered by one of my favorite new artists of 2010. Plus enjoy Christmas songs from Röyksopp, Saint Etienne, The Pipettes and The Golden Filter. Sweet baby Jebus, it’s a Christmas miracle!

Well, happy holidays. This is my present to you. Oh, and you wouldn’t believe it but I talked with Oprah and she has a present for you too:

Katy B & Magnetic Man

Dubstep was all the rage in the UK this year (see also Rusko) and beautiful newcomer Katy B blew up the scene with some super catchy singles. A little white girl with a very smooth Afro-Caribbean sounding voice, Katy B definitely seems like she’s going somewhere. First up is ‘Katy On A Mission’, produced by Benga.

Katy B also has a new single being officially being released next week in the UK called ‘Lights On’ produced by Geeneus with guest vocals by Ms. Dynamite, one of the many grime MC’s now moving over to dubstep.

And for an extra treat I have video of a live session performance of Magnetic Man’s ‘Perfect Stranger’, featuring strings not found on the more clubby studio version of the song. Ironically Magnetic Man actually consists of three of the biggest producers in dubstep right now–Skream, Benga and Artwork–working with a variety of guest vocalists, like our Katy B on this track. It sounds amazing, so you should really take a listen:
