Rebecca Black – Person Of Interest

I really wanted to post the video for Rebecca Black’s “My Moment,” believe me, I really did, but I just couldn’t bring myself to doing so. It was just too crappy, and not in the wonderfully horrible way “Friday” is crappy. It was just plain dull, and there was nothing interesting or train-wrecky about it. That’s probably why, despite the huge buzz it got when it was announced that Rebecca’s second video was on the internet, no one was talking about it days later.

I am surprised, however, that nothing was made of her third single, “Person of Interest”. I hadn’t even heard about it until I came across it randomly while surfing the net today. While it’s no “Friday”, (really, what could live up to that?) there’s just enough wrong (i.e. right) with this video to make it entertaining. First of all, there’s the whole concept of the song. This is probably the only pop/love song I can think of that uses a suspect in a horrible crime as its primary metaphor for liking a boy. I mean, sure, “Every Breathe You Take” is about a stalker, but Sting is so subtle with his metaphor that most people still think this is an appropriate song to play for their first dance at a wedding. Rebecca’s not so subtle.

The rest of the video is just dorky enough that you could probably make a few internet memes out of it, but it doesn’t really get batshit crazy until the end of the video when Rebecca bum rushes the stage at someone else’s concert to sing the end of her song.

First off, how much must it suck to be playing your own show, probably one of your first shows if not the first, at a carnival of all places, only to have Rebecca Black, of all people, grab the mic from you? The only thought that can be going through your head at that moment is “Now my career is officially over”. Then you start to think about those girls. Are they Japanese? They’re dressed like harajuku girls, but then there’s that Chinese dragon that jumps out of fucking nowhere, and then you notice that it’s quite possible the girls might even be white. I can’t frickin’ tell. Finally you find out that Rebecca’s falsifying a police report so that the police sketch artist can draw a picture of the guy she was with, but if that wasn’t bad enough the stetch artist draws them like how a carnival artist would.

I’m sorry, I know the song sucks, but I still love it. Haters gonna hate, but I can’t help be endlessly entertained by Rebecca Black.

No Ceremony/// – Deliverus

I must be in a little bit of a melancholic mood today because right now I’m really digging No Ceremony///’s 3rd song, “Deliverus”. The video for “Deliverus” has some tone appropriate old black and white footage of some British factory workers to go with this quiet, lo-fi track.

Pogo – Davyd

Nick Bertke, aka Pogo, is fresh out of the slammer after spending 3 weeks inside US detention centers due to his management giving him some shitty travel documents (boy, am I glad now that I didn’t buy tickets to his most recent show in Seattle). Apparently this horrible management company removed Pogo from their list of clients and stopped communicating with him the moment they found out what happened to him, the bastards. Thankfully he’s back home safe and sound and already he’s released a new music video for “Davyd”, a mash-up of sounds from Spielberg’s ‘A.I.’. The song has this beautifully haunted melancholy to it that perfectly matches the tone of the film it’s based on, and honestly this is one of my all-time favorite Pogo songs thus far. It’s sooo good and it’s good to have him back, especially if it means we get more songs like this one.

Young Dreams – Young Dreams

I like this song. It sounds a bit like if Vampire Weekend did a cover of Bow Wow Wow’s cover of “Fools Rush In”. This 12-piece Norwegian collective self-describe their genre as ‘Tropical Pop-Symphonies’, and I think that’s a pretty apt description of what you’re about to hear. The video is pretty fantastic too, chronicling the wasted day of a brother and sister alone in the house on a snow day. I love Seattle, but there are definitely times when I miss living in a place where snow in the winter is a normal thing. Must be in my Scandinavian blood. This song would be perfect with a cup of hot chocolate next to a fire with three feet of snow piled up outside the window.

D E N A – Boyfriend

Say what you will about early 90’s fashion, but man, did they know how to dance back then. D E N A’s 90’s infused R&B dance track “Boyfriend” uses found footage of various people dancing at soul trains, beach parties, etc, that perfectly fits the song’s retro vibe. The track and video are so fun that it’s going to make you want to get up and dance right along with them.

Make Out – You Can’t Be Friends With Everyone

Make Out’s sound is very much early 90’s alternative girl punk, similar to bands like L7, The Breeders or Luscious Jackson, but in “You Can’t Be Friends With Everyone” co-producer MNDR gives their sound a little modern spit and polish to make the song sound like a contemporary explosion of fun and anarchy. The 2 minute long video fits the song perfectly, featuring two of the lead band members going on a rampage through the streets, destroying everything in their path with a “fuck it” spirit of abandon. The video has this propulsive drive that makes it a blast to watch. My favorite moment in the video has to be when she grabs the puppy from someone and you recoil in horror, thinking she’s going to throw it at the ground like she has everything else and, well, let’s just calm your fears right now and just say she doesn’t throw the puppy. It’s a really cute moment.

The Sound Of Arrows – Wonder

The Sound Of Arrows have finally released their debut album and have a new music video for “Wonders” to celebrate its release. I downloaded the album last night and was kinda surprised to discover that a lot of the new songs that I hadn’t heard before sounded quite a bit like Pet Shop Boys songs, which in retrospect I guess I can see, but I never would have guessed it before listening to the album. You can get just a little bit of that vibe in “Wonders” but I didn’t notice any of that in “Magic”, “Into The Clouds” or “Nova” (all of which I’ve posted previously). Some of the filler tracks on the album, however, I would have sworn were Pet Shop Boys songs if someone had played the song for me and not told me who recorded it. So I guess enjoy the new song “Wonders” below, and if you like Pet Shop Boys, pick up the new The Sound Of Arrows album, entitled ‘Voyage’.

Glass Candy – Warm In The Winter

My favorite members of Italians Do It Better, Glass Candy, have a epic new single out called “Warm In The Winter” and today we got treated to the new music video for it. Despite appearing old, the video actually uses recent concert tour footage shot of the band with a Super-8 to help make it look and feel like it was shot years ago. The song is among Glass Candy’s best, seven-and-a-half minutes of pulsating synths and gorgeous, uplifting vocals, and leads me to believe that when a full-length album does finally come out that it is going to be fantastic. With the temperatures finally dropping around the country, it’s the perfect time to crank this tune up in the car and go out for a drive.

By the way, if you like this kind of electro-infused Italio-disco you should really check out ‘Drive’, starring Ryan Gosling. Not only is the movie seriously probably my favorite movie of the year right now, but the soundtrack is AMAZING, filled with fantastic tracks that sound just like the one above.

Wintercoats – No Scrubs (TLC Cover)

Wintercoats recently covered TLC’s “No Scrubs” and the results are, simply put, magical. The cover is quieter than the original and has a full string accompaniment; it’s beautiful and yet a little creepy at the same time. It would go perfectly in a moody CW teen show. I can’t get enough of this:

Slow Magic – Free Flows

Slow Magic is back with another amazing song, “Free Flows”. So far it’s looking like this mysterious act can do no wrong. The song’s slow groove just gets right in under your skin and takes you to some amazing places.
