M.I.A. – Bad Girls

Speaking of M.I.A, she also came out with a new music video the same day as Madonna, even though the song isn’t brand new–it was first heard on her VickiLeekx mixtape. And while I think it was a poor PR move on her part to flip off the entire Super Bowl audience, personally I was fine with it. I mean, as this song clearly points out, she is a bad girl. “Live fast, die young / bad girls do it well.” I can’t really say that any of us who’ve been a fan of hers were really all that surprised or shocked by it. (I mean, that’s a whole lot different than, say, flashing an entire Super Bowl audience.)

This video shot in Morocco is, simply put, completely bad ass. “Bad Girls” is one of my very favorite official music videos to come out in a long time. You’ve got crazy car stunts, stunningly epic Lawrence of Arabia-esque visuals, and a whole lot of swagger. On top of that, “Bad Girls” is probably M.I.A.’s best song since “Paper Planes”. There’s a whole lot to love in this video.

Madonna feat. M.I.A. & Nicki Minaj – Give Me All Your Luvin’

I probably should have posted this video last week before the Super Bowl when I wanted to (but was too lazy to) to provide a little context for Madonna’s Super Bowl performance, but at least M.I.A.’s odd choice of flipping off the entire world gives me a second chance to post this video on the blog with some sort of relevance. I quite like Madonna’s new single. I think it’s really catchy and fun, and the video is very clever, if a little weird. I mean, how is it that M.I.A. has gotten in so much trouble for flipping the bird during the Super Bowl and yet I haven’t heard of a single complaint against that completely random shot at the end of this video of Madonna chucking a baby off screen. Seriously, what’s the deal with the baby chucking?

As much as I love this song and video it does bother me just a little bit over how much this video reminded me of Nicola Roberts’ “Beat Of My Drum” video, from Madonna’s hair and clothing choices to the eerily similar spelling out Love/Luv sing-song chorus’s both songs use. Still, it’s a great song and Madonna’s never looked better.

Neon Indian – Fallout

Here’s the write-up that Adult Swim did for this video on its YouTube page:

“When we heard “Fallout” from Neon Indian’s new record, ‘Era Extrana’, we knew we had to do something with him. So we tracked his ass down and said “let us make you a video!” He said “Uhhh, sure…” and we immediately called Lilfuchs, who made this homage to 80’s toons and sexy commercials. Put your arm around someone and click on this bad boy.”

And I think that sums up pretty well what it is that you’re about to see.

Kindness – Gee Up

I love everything about this video. The song itself is a catchy, quick little minute-and-a-half funky disco-revival ditty by Kindness (aka Adam Bainbridge), whose album ‘World You Need A Change Of Mind’ comes out March 17th. Since the song itself is so short the rest of the video consists of the people who made the film ironically commenting about how short a video it is. Very meta stuff. A great video and a great track. I can’t wait to hear that album.

Chromatics – Into The Black

The Chromatics, yet another member of Italians Do It Better, have a new album coming out soon called ‘Kill For Love’, and “Into The Black”, which is actually a cover of one of my favorite Neil Young songs, is the second single they’ve released for it. “Into The Black” starts out as a pretty straight-forward, more feminine cover of the song before the signature Chromatics synths start to bleed in at the end.

Chairlift feat. Das Racist’s Kool A.D. – Party (Beyoncé cover)

This is the rare cover that makes the original sound like it’s the one that’s suppose to be the cover. Caroline Polachek’s vocals in this song are stunning and somehow feel much more authentic to the song’s period than Beyoncé’s, as if this song were plucked right off a R&B radio station circa 1988. It’s a much more subtle, light and airy version of the song than Beyoncé’s. I love, love, love it.

Despite having the exact same synthesizer-based R&B melody, Beyoncé’s version of the song sounds much more contemporary than Chairlift’s cover, as if they sampled the Chairlift version. You can compare the original to the cover below:

Desire – Under Your Spell

You’d think that you’d start to go mad if you had to listen to the same song for 27 minutes straight, and in most cases you’d probably be right, but Desire’s “Under Your Spell” is just one of those songs that I could listen to all day long. Christian Dior recently used 27 minutes of “Under Your Spell” for their Haute Couture Spring-Summer 2012 collection runway show and that song combined with the pristine setting and the amazing Mad Men-esque fashion gives this video an ethereal, otherworldly quality. This is definitely worth checking out, if just to have going on in the background while you do something else, but if you’re also into fashion this is just a fantastic show.

As a bonus, here’s a fan video of “Under Your Spell” made from footage of the film Drive, which is where I (and probably most everybody else) first heard “Under Your Spell.” If you haven’t already seen Drive check it out. It’s definitely my pick for best movie of 2011 and it has such an amazing soundtrack filled with great songs like this one from label Italians Do It Better.

Malcolm McLaren – Madame Butterfly

Oh snap, I haven’t posted in a while! Sorry guys. While I regroup here’s a hidden gem from 1984 that I randomly came across the other day.

During his career Malcolm McLaren wore a lot of different hats, including acting as the manager for the Sex Pistols and the New York Dolls, discovering “voguing” before Madonna had even heard of it, and he is also famous for introducing the UK to hip-hop music. Pretty crazy for a guy you’ve probably never heard of before, right? [Fun bonus fact: He also did “About Her”, which was featured in Kill Bill Vol. 2.]

In 1984 he decided to fuse electronic music, R&B and opera for his album ‘Fans’ to fantastic effect. “Madame Butterfly” (which contains vocals from the Puccini opera) reminds me a bit of Elite Gymnastics and Slow Magic, the later of whom I’ve been listening to a lot lately. Do yourself a favor and go back and listen to all those Slow Magic songs. They’re all gold.

The video is pretty 80’s. It consists of vacant, Robert Palmer-esque models at a Roman bath, lounging around and basically doing whatever the hell it was that 80’s music video models did in their spare time. The song is a delight. The more I listen to it the deeper it draws me in. I hope you enjoy it as much as I have.

A$AP Rocky – Wassup

A$AP Rocky’s ‘LiveLoveA$AP’ mixtape is pretty sweet, in no small part because of Clams Casino’s atmospheric beats. If you haven’t downloaded that album yet you really should, because it doesn’t really sound like anything else out there right now. You can hear Clams Casino’s tight production in full force below in “Wassup”.

Yelle – Comme Un Enfant (Freaks remix)

You may remember Nathan Barnatt’s crazy dance videos for Madeon’s “Pop Culture” and Madeon’s remix of Yelle’s “Que veux-tu”. Well he’s back with another new dance video to yet another great Yelle song, this time a Freaks remix of “Comme Un Enfant.” After being caught daydreaming about romancing Yelle, Nathan gets reamed out by his boss to get cleaning the backroom, which he then proceeds to do LIKE A BOSS. The video has cameo appearances TJ Miller, Martin Starr (who was also in the “Pop Culture” video) and even Yelle herself(!!!) C’est Non Un Blog approves.
