Tokyo-based Jesse Ruins makes droned out synth dream pop in the same vein as M83. It’s the perfect music for chilling out on a warm summer’s evening.

The Weeknd just came out with a new video for “The Morning” that is much more upbeat than previous songs, while still keeping some of that darkness brewing underneath the surface. Very sexy stuff. The video is apparently about models undergoing Jesus’ trials in the desert…or something like that. Who cares? It’s a great song.

One of my favorite, most listened to new songs lately is Austra’s “Lose It”. The band makes me think of Florence and the Machine if they were a dance pop band. Beautiful vocals and a great beat, what more can you ask for this summer? I only “get” about 25% of the imagery used in the video but it doesn’t matter. It’s still pretty cool, nonetheless.
I’m not really the biggest Bruno Mars fan, and this song is only so-so to me (it sounds a bit like something Puck might sing on Glee), but this video for “The Lazy Song” is awesome. Leonard Nimoy plays the most hilarious grumpy ol’ lazy bastard you ever did see. His “I just don’t give a fuck” attitude is fantastic. I like to think that this is how Nimoy spends every day of his retirement.
If all of the day’s music posts that I’ve bombarded you with were a little too energetic or sexy for your tastes, then I think you’ll dig this video from jj. Well, even if you didn’t think that, I still think you’ll like this video from jj. This video is a perfect taste of summer, showing children playing in the Swedish countryside. Reminds me a bit of summers when I was a kid. This video’s all about the best parts of summer, and I think that’s why I like it so much.
I really hope Florrie makes it big. She’s cute as a button, makes addictive and modern pop music with producer Fred Falke, and comes from the humble origins of a session drum player, if you believe it. I’ve been following her for a while now and all I have to say is, what’s not to love? In her new single “Begging Me” off of her upcoming second EP, Florrie channels her inner Robert Palmer in a song that better be used in the upcoming Mission: Impossible 4 soundtrack.
The Weeknd combines modern club sounds like hyperdub / dubstep / darkcore with 90’s R&B vocals to make sex music for 3AM on a Friday night. It’s dark, drug-fueled, and damn sexy. Their video for “What You Need” will give you a really good idea of what I’m talking about.
In what seems like a trend towards my posting fan videos that are even better than the official videos, I give you the NSFW Hasselhoff edit of “What You Need”. I have no idea where this footage comes from and I really can’t decide if this is from an arty softcore porn film or a perfume commercial. You be the judge.

Finally I’ve got another fan video of their song “High For This”, which very appropriately uses footage from my favorite movie to watch when I hate the world, Requiem for a Dream. Enjoy.

Is this the newest music video for The Golden Filter’s “Dance Around The Fire”, or is this an extended promo video for Victoria’s Secret’s newest swimwear line? The world may never know. (OK, it’s pretty obvious this is an add for Victoria’s Secret that just happens to use an awesome Golden Filter song. But as it contains two of my favorite things, The Golden Filter and beautiful women, I thought I’d share it anyway.)
[Fun Fact: The only concert t-shirt that I actually bought at a concert is a Golden Filter t-shirt. It’s slightly too small for me, but I won’t tell if you don’t.]
Saturday, aka not-Judgement Day, did give us some rapture, and that came in the form of the season finale of SNL. While the majority of this season has been pretty shitty, bringing Justin Timberlake back to host was a serious godsend, since just about every part of Saturday’s show was great. I honestly believe they should have Justin, Alec Baldwin and Jon Hamm rotate as host every week and make the world a better place.
The best part of the show was of course the return of the “Dick In A Box” guys, fresh off of their motherloving. “Dick In A Box” and “Motherlover” were both perfect in the way they made ridiculous songs sound oh so good in an authentic 90’s R&B style. The new song does not disappoint and carries on that tradition. Lady Gaga makes a guest appearance and I have to say, for some odd reason I’ve never been turned on by her until seeing her dressed up as Chrissy from Three’s Company. I don’t know what that says about me.
The Lonely Island also put out a fantastic album this month, Turtleneck & Chain. I listened to that about five times the instant it became available on the net and arguably the biggest stand out track on the album has to be “Jack Sparrow”. In it Michael Bolton plays their hook man who is a little distracted by the Pirates of the Caribbean marathon he just finished watching. Lucky for us, SNL thought this was the best song too, as they made it into a Digital Short a few weeks ago.
