Best Coast – Our Deal

I love Best Coast. Their music is so amazing and timeless. And they’ve been fortunate enough to have really fantastic videos to go with their songs. Their newest song/video is no exception. Drew Barrymore directs this West Side Story inspired video starring a very grown up and sexy looking Chloë Moretz and quite a few other celebrities you might be familiar with (Donald Glover, Teen Wolf’s Tyler Posey, Alia Shawkat and Miranda Cosgrove, to name a few). It’s a great little four minute movie. I really like the little hidden in-joke that Chloë, who played the vampire in the American remake of ‘Let The Right One In’, is a member of the Night Creepers (whose symbol is a wolf) who falls in love with Tyler, who plays a werewolf on Teen Wolf, a member of the Day Trotters. The style, the cinematography, the acting…all perfect.

[Author’s Note: I just clicked on my Best Coast tag and discovered that this is actually the third Best Coast post in a row that I’ve started off with “I love Best Coast”, or some variation therein. I guess I really must like these guys. I’m really happy to see that they’re really starting to blow up big now. Seriously, if you don’t have their album ‘Crazy For You’ yet, what the heck are you waiting for?]

iamamiwhoami – Clump

I’ll be honest with you, “Clump” isn’t my favorite iamamiwhoami song nor video for that matter, but it is still iamamiwhoami, so therefore it’s still awesome. I do really like the chorus breakdown at the 1:32 mark. Very cool. I just wish the video were a little more interesting like some of her others. It looks like she’s having sex on a bed of toilet paper or something.

Twin Sister – Bad Street

Only a week later and I’ve got some new Twin Sister for you. Despite the title “Bad Street” it seems the band crashed a little girl’s birthday party on a pretty good street. Unless they’re the bad ones on this street. They look like they are mingling pretty well though, so who knows? Anyway the song is a pretty good slice of indie rock that you can use for your own summer parties.

Flight Facilities – Foreign Language / Crave You & Luke Million – Arnold

Flight Facilities (with a little help from Jess on vocals) have a new single out called “Foreign Language” that’s very disco-tastic. This song would fit in perfectly at the height of 70’s disco-mania and it has a very appropriate music video featuring footage from the movie ‘Roller Boogie’ to go along with it. I don’t know what it is that I like so much about modern/retro roller disco, but I like it very, very much. (I’m guessing it’s probably the hot pants. Ok, it’s the hot pants.)

I know I posted the video for Flight Facilities’ first single “Crave You” featuring Giselle, but I can’t find a tag for it, and I went back quite a ways into my history and I still couldn’t find it there either. So just in case I never did post the video, which I swear I did, I’ll post it again here:

And if you are craving even more 70’s disco nostalgia, here’s a song Luke Million made using sample’s from Arnold Schwarzenegger’s ‘Pumping Iron’.

Memory Cassette – Surfin (Sail A Whale version)

Back in 2009 when Memory Tapes were still called Memory Cassette they made a song called “Surfin” that Sail A Whale then made into a beautiful remix. Sail A Whale’s Sebastian Rozenberg has now made their version into a music video, which you can see below. While the song’s not new, the video is, and since I’d never heard the song before now I’m pretty glad Sebastian decided to make a video for it.

Björk – Crystalline

Much like chocolate and peanut butter, Björk and Michel Gondry are two great tastes that go better together. Since Michel Gondry has already directed about half of Björk’s videos it only makes sense that he would do the video for “Crystalline”, the first single off of her new album. Man, I can’t wait to get my hands of this album. “Crystalline” will sound pretty familiar to anyone who’s listened to Björk’s more recent work — Björk’s beautiful layered harmonies accompanied by quiet tinkling bell and xylophone notes, punctuated by explosive techno beats. Like I said before, I can’t wait to hear more of this album.

Tennis – Marathon / Take Me Somewhere / Waterbirds

Tennis is a trio out of Denver who make beautiful retro pop songs, perfect for chilling out in the summer sun. Not surprisingly, pretty much all of their music videos also feature summer themes. “Marathon” contains footage from what I’m guessing is the south of France, and boy does it look nice there.

“Take Me Somewhere” features the whole band on a sailboat, which I believe is the place where they actually got the idea to start a band.

Finally “Waterbirds” features old Super 8 beach footage. The retro footage definitely fits the vibe of this song.

Givers – Up Up Up

What would Vampire Weekend sound like with a girl in the band? Probably a lot like Givers. Caution: Listening to this song may create a strong urge to put on boat shoes and head off to the Cape.

Friends – Friend Crush

This reminds me a bit of Luscious Jackson. It’s definitely got that girl group from the 90’s vibe to it.

Twin Sister – All Around And Away We Go

I love this song and its video. The lead singer has this really sexy nasal, breathy quality to her voice, as if Nico tried to sing through the top of her head. As soon as she starts to sing that first line I’m absolutely in love. As Blacksun1942 commented on YouTube: “Holy shit, clicked “play” and this song turned out to be way more awesome than I thought.”
