Florrie – Shot You Down

With every new video Florrie seems less like a cute young girl who can play the drums and more and more like a fashion model…who also happens to play the drums. She actually looks a lot like Alexis Bledel from her recent appearance in Mad Men here. “Shot You Down” isn’t my favorite song from Florrie, but I do really like how halfway through the chorus the music and melody keep rising and rising into a crescendo of gut-punching sound. And all and all I’d definitely say this is the best song off of her latest EP, ‘Late’.

Savoir Adore – Dreamers

“Dreamers” is one of those songs that practically dares you to not like it. It’s such a massively epic pop song, beautifully counter-playing the aggressive opening electronic licks with the stunning back-and-forth male and female vocals harmonizing with melodies straight out of a fairy tale. The song is so outstanding that it’s kind of amazing that it has taken them this long to come out with a video for it. Expect a full length album, ‘Our Nature’, from these guys this Fall.

D E N A – Cash, Diamond Rings, Swimming Pools

“Cash, Diamond Rings, Swimming Pools” is about as addictive as a song can get. From the catchy/cute chorus that immediately embeds itself into your brain, to the casual, rolling, old skool, lo-fi dance beats, this song has got it going on. On top of that D E N A is just full of awkward nerdy swagger in the video. Love the fashion choices, especially that floral-print suit she wears. The video reminds me a lot of Grimes’ “Oblivion” video, in that they kept a lot of the spontaneous reactions from the random people at the flea market that they walked by while filming, giving each frame a certain cinéma vérité quality that is endlessly entertaining to watch. (Fun fact: The nerdy guy she grabs by the arm and starts dancing with is Erlend Øye.)

The Science! Mixtape

Anyone who knows me knows that I’m not the biggest fan of summer, what with its excessive heat and that bright shiny thing in the sky and whatnot. But there is one thing I absolutely love about summer: new music. Not just any new music, but new SUMMER music. I love the way that summer music makes me feel. And inspired by how much I love new music I decided that I had to get another new mixtape out to you kind people as quickly as I possibly could.

These things aren’t easy to compile. They take a lot of time to finish and there’s a lot of challenges that go into making one of these mixtapes, but the rewards of seeing it all put together make it totally worth it. It’s always my hope that you guys get as much enjoyment out of hearing these as I do seeing the finished product all put together.

With that said, get your fill of new music right here.

For some reason the moment when I found this picture I knew that it had to be my next mixtape cover and I just knew that the mixtape had to be called ‘Science!’ (said the same way as how that guy in Thomas Dolby’s “She Blinded Me With Science” says it.) Don’t ask me why, that’s just how my brain works sometimes. Much the same way as how I don’t know how I put those two things together, I’m not exactly sure how I came up with the exact configuration of this mixtape, how I picked the songs I did, or why I put them in the order I did, but just like with this cover the minute I heard this mixtape the way it is now as I’ve presented it to you, I just knew it felt right. Maybe you don’t hear it, but there’s a certain organic-ness to this that I just love.

As always, I’ve tried to start the mixtape off with a little appetizer to set the tone and since we’ve just officially started summertime, what better than “Wet Summer” by Bondax to get you in the mood? That’s followed by “Deuxième” by Memoryhouse as remixed by Tours, who give the song this certain ‘je ne sais quoi’ feeling of it being just hot enough outside–not too hot mind you–just right under that level where you say, “It’s too damn hot out today”. Yet another song to get you in that summer mood is Magic Wands’ “Aloha Moon”, complete with tropical wave sounds and hulu undertones.

One of my newest personal discoveries is Robots With Rayguns, who I absolutely adore. I couldn’t limit myself to just one song of theirs, so I settled for one new song and one fantastic remix of Chromeo’s “Hot Mess”. You can see their video for “Sugarbaby” below, set to footage from, I believe, Breakin’ 2: Electric Boogaloo and possibly some other sources (if you know the other movies, send me a message). The instant I saw this video I fell in love with the band, and I think you might too. Another one of my new discoveries is 2Sugars, whose “Archibald” is also included here. Check out their Soundcloud page. They’ve actually got a lot of music there, and it’s all good.

Most of the stuff on this mixtape is actually from brand new unsigned acts, meaning this is my most hipster “I knew them before they were cool” mixtape yet. For the first time the entire mixtape is composed of music I’ve only just discovered in the last month (a lot of it actually came from the week before I started putting it all together). I think that gives it a really fresh feeling of immediacy and living in the now, don’t you think?

And I really enjoyed figuring out how the mixtape ends. Edwin Van Cleef is one of a few artists presented here who had several songs in contention for the final tracklisting, but there could be only one and I felt “Falling” fit in best with where this mixtape was going. Who knows, maybe you’ll hear one of the cut songs on a future mixtape. The final song on the mixtape is actually one of my favorites of the whole lot. I originally actually had a different remix of Bluebell’s “Normal Heights” set somewhere in the middle of the mix, but when I heard Draper’s version of the song at the last minute it absolutely blew me away and I knew I had to include it. There’s no video for Draper’s version, but you can see the video for the original version of the song below, which already on its own was one of my very favorite songs of this year. And Draper’s version just makes the song that much better!

Well that’s it folks. I hope you like it. If you haven’t already, join C’est non Blog’s Facebook page to get all the latest updates on new music. And if you like what I’m selling, tell your friends! I’m trying to make a run at having a greater reader base than just the people who I already talk to and annoy all the time. Good music is a good thing. Share it with your friends! The ‘Don’t Believe The DJ’ Mixtape was the most downloaded one yet, and I have all you kind folks to thank for that.

Best Coast – The Only Place

For a while I was all about Best Coast, that is until they stopped putting out new videos and Summer Camp then grabbed and took hold of my imagination, becoming my cute two-piece indie band of choice. In that time Best Coast didn’t stop being awesome though, and they’re back to prove it with their new single “The Only Place” off of their new sophomore album. This video is the very definition of adorkable. Both the song and the video embody what it is to fuck off on a carefree summer day, to just do whatever you want without a care in the world. Fun, fun, fun.

Trails and Ways – Nunca

“Nunca” is a breezy dream pop track “inspired by a hot June day in São Paulo listening to Drake and Jorge Ben” and this video, crafted by blog favorite David Dean Burkhart, takes that tropical summer vibe even further with footage of people roller skating down the São Paulo boardwalk and cutting some killer waves on their surfboards. Click on this video only if you want to take yourself to a warmer, more relaxing place where life is always good.

Slime – Anni

It seems tradition that I have to post at least one chill song every Sunday afternoon and this week is no exception. I don’t really know much about this London based act, other than the fact that this song makes for the perfect background music to your lazy, sunny afternoon. The piano and bass parts just shuffle along without a care in the world, which is about how you’ll feel while listening to it.

Azealia Banks – Liquorice

Azealia Banks’ latest video is a lot of fun, a tongue-in-cheek take on Sergio Leone-style westerns and 70’s exploitation cinema. The song rocks some classic acid house beats, a 90’s R&B-style chorus and her typical potty mouth rhymes. “Liquorice” is catchy as hell, and I love how it sounds like she’s mixed several different genres into one cohesive whole. Her songs always sound like you stuck my iTunes into a blender and poured out a glass of the results.

Little Boots – Headphones

I really like this song. The lyrics are very cute, especially the catchy chorus:

I wear my Headphones at the disco
And nobody ever has to know
I wear my Headphones at the disco
And when the music stops
Then you’ll hear me singing

La la lalala, la la la la lalala

With this song and “Every Night I Say A Prayer” it seems Little Boots might actually be able to deliver this time on all the disco queen promise she showed before her first album came out.

Beach House – Lazuli

I admit, I’ve been pretty slow to get on the Beach House train. Their earlier stuff never really took hold of me in any discernible way, and they sounded a little too “folky” for my taste. But “Lazuli” has a nice chill cosmic vibe that I love that goes pretty well with the “Astral Projection” video I posted earlier. “Lazuli” has some cool sounding spaced-out electronics and the video features what appears to be Sigorney Weaver’s apartment from Ghostbusters. I’m definitely more likely to go back and listen to their older stuff after hearing this track.
