The Science! Mixtape

Anyone who knows me knows that I’m not the biggest fan of summer, what with its excessive heat and that bright shiny thing in the sky and whatnot. But there is one thing I absolutely love about summer: new music. Not just any new music, but new SUMMER music. I love the way that summer music makes me feel. And inspired by how much I love new music I decided that I had to get another new mixtape out to you kind people as quickly as I possibly could.

These things aren’t easy to compile. They take a lot of time to finish and there’s a lot of challenges that go into making one of these mixtapes, but the rewards of seeing it all put together make it totally worth it. It’s always my hope that you guys get as much enjoyment out of hearing these as I do seeing the finished product all put together.

With that said, get your fill of new music right here.

For some reason the moment when I found this picture I knew that it had to be my next mixtape cover and I just knew that the mixtape had to be called ‘Science!’ (said the same way as how that guy in Thomas Dolby’s “She Blinded Me With Science” says it.) Don’t ask me why, that’s just how my brain works sometimes. Much the same way as how I don’t know how I put those two things together, I’m not exactly sure how I came up with the exact configuration of this mixtape, how I picked the songs I did, or why I put them in the order I did, but just like with this cover the minute I heard this mixtape the way it is now as I’ve presented it to you, I just knew it felt right. Maybe you don’t hear it, but there’s a certain organic-ness to this that I just love.

As always, I’ve tried to start the mixtape off with a little appetizer to set the tone and since we’ve just officially started summertime, what better than “Wet Summer” by Bondax to get you in the mood? That’s followed by “Deuxième” by Memoryhouse as remixed by Tours, who give the song this certain ‘je ne sais quoi’ feeling of it being just hot enough outside–not too hot mind you–just right under that level where you say, “It’s too damn hot out today”. Yet another song to get you in that summer mood is Magic Wands’ “Aloha Moon”, complete with tropical wave sounds and hulu undertones.

One of my newest personal discoveries is Robots With Rayguns, who I absolutely adore. I couldn’t limit myself to just one song of theirs, so I settled for one new song and one fantastic remix of Chromeo’s “Hot Mess”. You can see their video for “Sugarbaby” below, set to footage from, I believe, Breakin’ 2: Electric Boogaloo and possibly some other sources (if you know the other movies, send me a message). The instant I saw this video I fell in love with the band, and I think you might too. Another one of my new discoveries is 2Sugars, whose “Archibald” is also included here. Check out their Soundcloud page. They’ve actually got a lot of music there, and it’s all good.

Most of the stuff on this mixtape is actually from brand new unsigned acts, meaning this is my most hipster “I knew them before they were cool” mixtape yet. For the first time the entire mixtape is composed of music I’ve only just discovered in the last month (a lot of it actually came from the week before I started putting it all together). I think that gives it a really fresh feeling of immediacy and living in the now, don’t you think?

And I really enjoyed figuring out how the mixtape ends. Edwin Van Cleef is one of a few artists presented here who had several songs in contention for the final tracklisting, but there could be only one and I felt “Falling” fit in best with where this mixtape was going. Who knows, maybe you’ll hear one of the cut songs on a future mixtape. The final song on the mixtape is actually one of my favorites of the whole lot. I originally actually had a different remix of Bluebell’s “Normal Heights” set somewhere in the middle of the mix, but when I heard Draper’s version of the song at the last minute it absolutely blew me away and I knew I had to include it. There’s no video for Draper’s version, but you can see the video for the original version of the song below, which already on its own was one of my very favorite songs of this year. And Draper’s version just makes the song that much better!

Well that’s it folks. I hope you like it. If you haven’t already, join C’est non Blog’s Facebook page to get all the latest updates on new music. And if you like what I’m selling, tell your friends! I’m trying to make a run at having a greater reader base than just the people who I already talk to and annoy all the time. Good music is a good thing. Share it with your friends! The ‘Don’t Believe The DJ’ Mixtape was the most downloaded one yet, and I have all you kind folks to thank for that.

It has come to my attention that more than a few people might have had issues with getting my mixtapes to play in the correct order, the way I intended them to be, but have either been too shy to say so, or just figured that they were meant to be played randomly. Indeed there always has been a method to my madness, and you can see the tracklisting to this mixtape below. I’ve also gone through some of the older mixtape blog posts and added tracklistings to them as well. You can easily go back to those posts by hitting the “mixtape” tag below. At some point I’ll get around to adding a tracklisting to all of them, but if you’re impatient for the order to a particular one just send me a message and I’ll get to it sooner rather than later.
