Summer is the perfect time for larger-than-life superhero blockbuster movies and lots and lots of killer new music. And since I haven’t put out a new mixtape since last December I thought I might embrace the superhero aesthetic and go nuts by super-sizing my newest mixtape to super-heroic proportions. The Superhero Summer Mixtape is comprised of 100 (!) amazing songs, which adds up in total to 7 continuous hours of larger-than-life new music. That should keep you guys busy for a while.
Click on these links to download Part 1, Part 2, and Part 3.
Included in each folder is a tracklist and playlist for each part of the mixtape so you can listen to each part separately in bite-sized chunks OR together as one monstrous continuous 100 track mix. Or just throw everything into your iTunes and make your own mixtape by listening to it all completely randomly. There’s no wrong way to listen. It’s entirely up to you!
The inspiration for this mixtape came from the amazing artwork of the Thing that you see above. Very quickly after putting together the Music Matters Mixtape I had amassed an extremely large amount of great new music for my next mixtape, and everything I had accumulated just sounded so good that it seemed nearly impossible to whittle down the list to make something more manageable. The moment that I found that image of The Thing I knew I had my answer on what to do. I’d use at as as my theme for a new super-sized mixtape.
Alrighty, well this thing is jam-packed up to the gills with new music, so why not give you a little taste of what you can expect? First up, I have two fantastic videos from Metronomy. “Love Letters”, directed by the great Michel Gondry, features the band playing live on a soundstage within a soundstage and the entire video is filmed in one long continuous tracking shot, which allows the band to play in multiple places at once in a typically Michel Gondry dream-like fashion. (The album version of the track, which is included on the mixtape, is two minutes longer than this version and has a much more immediate, intimate feel to it that I think you’ll all enjoy.)
Also included is “I’m Aquarius”. The video, directed by Édouard Salier, is a trippy 2001: A Space Odyssey meets science fiction paperback book cover voyage to a strange new world filled with laser cats and beautiful women. Have fun watching this astrologically based trip (in both senses of the word).
Lily Allen also contributes two tracks to this mixtape. “Our Time” has Lily getting into the backseat of a cab with three other drunk alternate versions of herself who drive around London all night only to end up being the worst kind of fare any cabbie wants to pick up.
“URL Badman” is one of my favorite tracks on the mixtape. The clever lyrics cut to the heart of all aspiring bloggers out there (eh hem) who think their opinions are all-powerful and have no qualms being mean to build themselves up. The electro-spazz beat on the track is a killer fist-pumper (and I especially love the goat/sheep-like bleating sound in the chorus.)
One final video before I leave you to discover the mixtape for yourselves. Selebrities’ “Temporary Touch” is a beautiful slice of New Wave-y power pop. If you like what you hear, you can also hear them on the mixtape doing a delightful cover of Fleetwood Mac’s “Everywhere”.
And that’s just a drop in the bucket of the 100 songs you’ll discover that make up this super-sized mixtape. Some other notable artists to look out for are Doss, who contributes two tracks and whose self-titled debut EP is near perfect in every way (“Softpretty will pretty much melt your brain); and Ejecta, who actually contributes three tracks to the mixtape because her album Dominae is so damn good I couldn’t pick just one (or two) tracks to feature here.
A million thanks again for downloading these mixtapes. A lot of love and care goes into making them for you guys. If you like what you hear make sure to Like C’est Non Un Blog’s Facebook page to keep up with all my latest music musings. And please drop me a line to let me know if you like what you hear.
