Video Assault!

iamamiwhoami is an internet mystery. It feels like a dozen videos have come out from this band/artist (?) over the course of 2010, but still no one knows much about her/them. At first it was rumored that this was a viral marketing campaign for Christina Aguilera’s new album because it leaked that she was working with a lot of big electronic producers, but then we finally got to hear said album and it sucked, so that theory went in the crapper. Apparently they are just some crazy Europeans. I don’t know much more than that, other than I want an album to download/buy, but what I do know is this video for ‘t’ is definitely the best video to come out so far, so I thought I’d share it:

Cee-Lo Green, who has one of the best voices in pop music today, covered Band of Horses’ ‘No One’s Gonna Love You,’ which was then remixed by Paul Epworth, finally giving us the song you’ll hear below. Good video, little depressing at the end, but good. The song is great though. You can imagine this playing and hundreds of Senior proms throughout the country. I’m still trying to track down the mp3. Be careful though: Definitely NSFW.

If you’ve been following my musical tastes lately then you know I’m a big fan of LA outfit, We Are The World. They’re weird, they put on amazing shows and even cooler songs. They finally got around to making an official video for their best song, Fight Song, which you can see/hear below:

Now I’ve got something really different for you. Today I discovered Shangaan Electro. Don’t ask me how. My curiosity knows no bounds. Like Kwaito, Shangaan is a new South African urban music style, which essentially sounds like what would happen if you took some traditional African music, sped up the music but not the vocals to 180 bpm Alvin and the Chipmunks levels, and then transferred what you had to a midi device. The best part has to be the dancing. You have to watch this video just to see people moving around like little windup toys. It’s hilarious.

[Video Bonus: If your co-worker is being especially annoying try turning this video up as loud as it will go on your computer and then intermittently turn on the YouTube Vuvuzela button. Do this, say, fifty times throughout the day. Your co-workers will hate you forever.]

Finally, a video from France’s electro pop outfit, Anoraak. Above Your Head is a pretty, pretty song with a semi-interesting video created from panoramic photography. Yes, the video is suppose to look that size. Blow it up full screen to get the full effect.

The-Dream – Trilogy

The-Dream’s new album, Love King, came out this Tuesday, but for some reason I didn’t pick it up. I didn’t think I’d really listen to it much. Then I saw this epic video entitled Trilogy, including songs Yamaha, Nikki pt. 2 and Abyss and knew I had to have it. Is this old school R&B? Updated New Wave? (The-)Dream pop? Who cares? It’s some great music.

Monday’s Video Roundup

While I love to post great songs for you folks to enjoy, what always makes a great song better is when there is a cool video to go with it. Lately I’ve found a whole string of neat videos to share, so I figured I’d just lump them all into one post.

First up is the new Mark Ronson video for his song, Bang Bang Bang. Ronson has ditched the retro Motown sound for his new album in favor of some serious synths, and you guys know how much I love my synths. Beyond that though, this is just a really bitching video, probably one of my favorite videos that I’ve seen in a while. Just try not to fall in love with the style of this video. Director Warren Fu hit the nail on the head perfectly, not just here, but with all of his videos. If you get a chance, check out his Vimeo page to see what I’m talking about.

For the lazy, I’ve also included Warren Fu’s video for Julian Casablancas’ (lead singer of the Strokes) 11th Dimension for you, a video whose style wouldn’t feel out of place in any 80’s sci-fi movie:

Someone who is also no stranger to fun, quirky videos is Marina and the Diamonds, whose new single Oh No! is cute as cute can be.

I had not noticed this before, but apparently I have a huge crush on Marina. Go figure.

Sometimes a cool video can make you take notice of a little song you might otherwise have ignored. There’s no better example I can think of than Finland’s Husky Rescue. Their video for song They Are Coming is like an eerie indie movie. The song is subtle in how it keeps building tension just like the images that go along with it. I totally want to see what happens next!

C’est Non Un Blog’s First Official Mixtape!

A little while ago  asked me if I would make a mixtape for her. The last one I made was probably 7 years ago, but if you’re still reading my blog then you obviously know I love new music and my iTunes is overflowing with cool tracks from around the world that I can share. (As of this post I currently have over 36,500+ songs to work with.)

So what I came up with for her is 2.4 hours of killer music spread out over 35 tracks that I collected by putting my iTunes on shuffle, taking anything I really loved listening to over and over, and putting those songs into a new folder. After only just a slight adjustment of the track order for better flow and consistency I got what you see below. After letting it sit for a while (I’ve maybe listened to it 4-5 times now) I thought I’d share it with all of you, too.

Most, if not all of it, you’ve probably never heard before. I tried to include rare songs that I’ve found all over the internet from my favorite music blogs and exhaustive Google searches. I also purposefully tried not to include any songs that I’ve previously posted on my blog to keep things fresh, although if you’d like me to include blog songs in future mixes just let me know and I’ll happily oblige.

So what should you expect? Well if you do watch the videos that I post then you probably already know that there’s going to be a lot of synth. And that for the most part this mix is one big dance party. I wanted to have some fun with this. These are definitely songs I listen to over and over.

I started things off with some Oriental hip-hop beats just to let you know what kind of ride you’re in for. After that we have some French space disco, dream pop, indie shoegaze, beautiful electronic distortion, thumping electro beats, bootay shakin’ hip-hop, and lots of hi-NRG dance music. I’ve got Hot Chip covering Shakira, two excellent Streets remixes by the equally excellent Royksopp and The Futureheads, respectively, and some oddly beautiful mash-ups of The Beatles and The Wu-Tang Clan. You’ll be surprised at how well they go together. This is music for urban city nights, full of worldly party music. I hope you like it.

You can download my first mix here!

I’m not going to post the full track listing here for fear that some internet police might track my blog down and sue me for illegally sharing music, although if you would like to have the track listing I do have it, so just let me know and I’ll send you a copy.

Also, if you’d like to know any more about any of the artists, remixers or covers, just let me know. I’m having fun making these and will most definitely make more, so if you like what you hear (or want to hear more of something specific) just let me know and I’ll try to integrate it into future mixes.

The Pains of Being Pure at Heart

Even though I should say no to love, I love The Pains of Being Pure at Heart. If you don’t already love them too, here’s several good reasons to:

Local Natives – World News

Occasionally, from time to time, I do listen to music that doesn’t have a synthesizer or a drum machine in it. I know, CRAZY. Sometimes you just need a good ol’ indie song to get you through the day. This song by LA’s Local Natives feels a bit like what you’d hear at the end of an independent movie when the hero realizes that life isn’t perfect and he didn’t get what he wanted, but things are going to turn out OK in the end anyway. And this video looks like the best beach party, well, ever. Check it out:

Funk D’Void – Diabla

I randomly came across this old-skool house video and I think it’s just the bee’s knees. The video is hilarious (slightly reminiscent of Peter Jackson’s Bad Taste) and the song is pretty killer too. It reminds me a lot of my early 2000’s club-head phase, which I’ve been feeling slightly nostalgic for recently. On my last trip home I smuggled some old Ministry of Sound albums back to Seattle with me so I can upload some older house and trance tracks into my iTunes.

James Yuill – On Your Own

Not only does this song have lots of synth (which you know I love) but it also has a pretty quirky, fun video to go with it. Enjoy!

His Clancyness – Summer Majestic

Blah, blah, blah…Canadian Summer Music! (Sorry, it’s late and I’m headed to bed. Enjoy.)

Wild Nothing – Chinatown

If you didn’t tell me that this video was from Wild Nothing, I’d probably say this was a new Radio Dept. song. Well, it’s not. These Virginians aren’t even Swedish and yet I’d say that they are pretty successfully rocking that Labrador sound. And just like anything on the Labrador label, this album is definitely worth picking up.
