The Joy Formidable – I Don’t Want To See You Like This

From what I’ve heard so far, I think it’s pretty fair to say that you should put The Joy Formidable on your Bands To Watch list for 2011. ‘I Don’t Want To See You Like This’ is pretty epic. If Elizabeth Fraser of The Cocteau Twins did the vocals for Interpol I think you’d get something that sounds a little bit like this:

Scooter – The Sound Above My Hair

This song and video are so epically bizarre that I can’t help share it with you fine folks. From the absurd song title to the German girls playing bagpipes to…well, I might as well just let you see for yourself:

Everything Is More Beautiful In Slow Motion

I wasn’t really sure what I was going to write for this first video of Diplo and Lunice’s amazing remix of Deerhunter’s ‘Helicopter’, when I remembered that I was still holding onto another video for Nujabes’ ‘Luv (sic) pt. 2’. What’s the connection? Well, aside from the fact that both are sublimely gorgeous songs that you’re all going to love instantly, the videos both incorporate slow motion footage of normal people to enhance the songs, the effect of which makes the ordinary feel extraordinary.

We start out in the Deerhunter video with Russian people walking about, going about their daily lives, while time slowly moves forward and sometimes even backwards. The Diplo and Lunice remix adds these fluttery beats to the song which makes it feel like you’re floating through these people’s lives. It’s the kind of song where if it came on in the club (and you were at least partially intoxicated) time would seem to slow to a crawl in the best way possible.

I’m still not really sure why I’ve waited this long to share our second video. I found this several months ago and instantly fell in love with how quirky, weird, and yet oddly moving this video was. The director of the video filmed various Japanese people running towards the camera, doing their best Monty Python silly walk impression, while filming the whole affair in slow motion. It’s really funny, but also kind of sweet, in no small part because of the song playing over it. Nujabes does hip-hop with jazz samples and this song has a fantastic saxophone loop that sounds like something out of a romantic film noir. The whole thing together really defies my poor excuse at trying to explain it, so you should just check it out for yourself and let me shut up.

Twin Shadow – Slow (FD Acoustic Session)

In case you missed my earlier post on Twin Shadow, or, like me, you were just so in love with ‘Slow’ that you had to have more, here’s a video of them playing the song live for Faits Divers. It’s a little more low key an intimate than the studio version. I hope you enjoy:

Beastie Boys vs. Daft Punk – Intergalatic Robot Rock (TXL RAF rework)

Thriftshop XL reworked this mash-up by iPunx into probably the best music video mash-up I’ve ever seen. Not only do the Beastie’s lyrics fit over the Daft Punk beat perfectly, but the vocodered chorus, giant monster fighting robot and general editing of the original ‘Intergalactic’ video match perfectly with Daft Punk’s overall robot-y-ness.

(Note: The video has a rather long intro, so if you’re someone prone to skipping over things in fits of boredom, the actual song starts around the 1:40 mark.)

Florrie – Give Me Your Love

Florrie is an up-and-coming pop princess who is kind of unique in that she actually started out as a session drummer for other artists before getting into singing her own songs (you can see her banging away at said drums in this video). She’s super cute, very talented and has worked with lots of great producers, like friend and frequent collaborator Fred Falke.

So far she’s put out almost two dozen of her songs for free to download on her website, including her first EP, which includes the song ‘Give Me Your Love’ (if you’re feeling guilty you can also pre-order it from iTunes there too). I’m a big fan (I put an Elite Gymnastics remix of her song ‘Come Back To Mine’ on my last mixtape and a Def Starr remix of ‘Panic Attack’ on the one before that) and I hope she’s actually going places.

Memoryhouse – When You Sleep

Memoryhouse is one of my favorite new bands this year, and they’ve done an excellent cover of a My Bloody Valentine’s song, which you can hear below. The original song is pretty damn amazing and I have to say that Memoryhouse totally does it justice here, slowing it down a little while going for the unplugged dorm concert vibe. It’s really beautiful and calming. Enjoy:

Pogo – Wishery

Pogo has leaked two new videos, one mashing up Dexter (which is unfortunately kind of blah) and this one, beautifully chopping up and recreating sounds from Snow White. Pogo’s put out lots of great videos before, but this is one of my favorites, sounding like a great combination of Bent and The Avalanches.

Showgirls!

Showgirls, the band (not the cult classic movie starring that girl from Saved By The Bell) makes fun and bubbly French disco pop that I keep coming back to, time and time again. The unofficial video for Foolin’ Around fits their tone perfectly, taking footage from a roller disco movie, the name of which I’m just too un-hip to know off the top of my head.

Here’s the unofficial video for Paola, featuring footage from Felini’s La Dolce Vida.  (Does knowing that make me hip?  Nah, that was an easy one.)

You can also get a free summer mixtape they made here.

Marina and the Diamonds – Shampain

Remember that episode of Glee when Rachel made that completely over the top, cliched 80’s music video? Apparently so does Marina. (Shampain kind of reminds me of Golfrapp’s newest videos too, don’t you think?) I’m loving Marina and the Diamonds more and more every day. It doesn’t hurt either that every remix that someone does for her seems to turn to gold.
