Mr. Little Jeans – The Suburbs (Arcade Fire cover)

I just added this song into my iTunes yesterday and loved it instantly, and I was even happier to discover this morning that the music video just made its way online. This song does everything that a great cover should: it sounds completely different from the original while still having enough elements of the original that if you heard it for the first time and didn’t know what it was, you would have that nagging feeling in the back of your head that you’d heard this song before. Plus it sounds just as great as the original Arcade Fire song, although I have to admit I do like this version better. Dark, ominous synths, soulful vocals, late-late night club beats. I loved it the instant I heard it.

Marissa Nadler – Alabaster Queen

I don’t normally post many songs this quiet on my blog but there is just something about this video that is so hauntingly beautiful. There has always been something about the forest that has spoken to me in some deep inner place and visuals of this video combined with the pretty melody of the song are just mesmerizing.

Hooray For Earth – Sails

This hallucinatory video depicts what appears to be the same girl digging up and burying the same box in a secret hiding place. Time appears to have fractured, creating multiple copies of the same girl in the same time and place. It reminded me of the excellent film ‘Timecrimes’ about a man who goes back in time to try and change the future, only to realize that every time he goes back in time he’s actually accidentally creating the future he was trying to change.

The visuals of this video go pretty well with Hooray For Earth’s song “Sails”. The song has a fantastic synth line, especially when the chorus kicks in around the 1:20 mark. At first the video didn’t interest me because it takes a while to get to the point, but it was the song that really sucked me in and kept me watching.

Alex Winston – Velvet Elvis

Alex Winston has a new EP coming out in September whose title track is “Velvet Elvis”, a love song to those tacky paintings, which you can hear below. Alex Winston is on a roll right now and I can’t wait until she actually puts out a full length release sometime next year.

Sadly, the embed code I was using isn’t working for whatever the hell player this is, so I’ve got to use a link to the video here.  I’ll try to fix this post when the video makes its way to an actually embeddable video player.  Damn you Pitchfork.tv!

Shed Muzak – Crave You (Flight Facilities cover)

I posted (or re-posted, assuming LJ ate some of my posts, which I’m almost convinced it did) the Flight Facilities video for “Crave You” not that long ago and now I have a beautiful acoustic cover of song by a group called Shed Muzak to share with you. I really like the last third of the song where they give it a bit of a late 60s Brazilian Tropicália feeling. Very chill and a great cover.

Private – We Got Some Breaking Up To Do / Killer On The Dancefloor

I was going through some old posts of mine and I was kind of shocked to discover when I clicked on my Private tag that I had only made one post about these guys. It boggles my mind that I never posted the video for “We Got Some Breaking Up To Do”. Despite the horrid image quality it’s still a really fun video and a fantastic song.

The lead singer of Private looks like if Crispin Glover and Corey Feldman had a baby (gross, I know) but he sings just like Micheal Jackson. Their songs, like “Killer On The Dancefloor” and “Secret Lover” (which I posted previously) are finely crafted pieces of MJ-style R&B pop. I wonder what happened to these guys? I hope they’re still making music.

Informal Poll: Best Of C’est Non Un Blog Mixtape

This is an open question to anyone and everyone who reads my blog:

When making my mixtapes in the past I’ve avoided using any songs that I’ve featured with videos on my blog, because I figured if people liked those songs they would immediately go out and download them just like I do. Why waste precious time on music people already own? Then it occurred to me that not everyone might be as obsessive compulsive as myself.

So my question to you guys is, Would you like to see a mixtape in the future that consists solely of music previously featured on this blog? If enough people show an interest I’ll put out a new “Best Of” mixtape. If not, I’ll just focus my energy on the next regular mixtape. If this is something you’d like to see in the future, just let me know!

Gold Panda – You

This fan made video for Gold Panda’s “You” is the perfect example of how less can sometimes be more. All this video consists of is a girl dancing in an empty swimming pool in Germany. However, with some clever editing and solid cinematography this video becomes so much more than that. There isn’t much to it, but it’s so beautiful to watch.

Miles Fisher – New Romance

The last time I wrote about Miles Fisher was when he did a delightful spoof of ‘American Psycho’ for his cover of The Talking Heads’ “This Must Be The Place”. Well, currently Miles Fisher is starring in the upcoming film ‘Final Destination 5’ and he has a new song out called “New Romance”, so what did he do? He made a Final Destination-themed ‘Saved by the Bell’ parody for his new music video starring the cast of ‘Final Destination 5’, that’s what! Talk about cross promotion! This video is really funny, really well done, and it takes me right back to Saturday mornings around 11:30. (That’s when Saved By The Bell was on, right?)

This has been a great week for fantastic music videos. So good that I’m a little scared to post any new music that doesn’t have an amazing video to go along with it. We’ll see what happens.

Toro y Moi – How I Know / Teams vs. Star Slinger – Close To Me

While I hope that every music video I post is going to be super exciting to watch, sometimes you just have to post a video because it contains a good song. Not every video can be a great mini-movie like the Best Coast video I just posted. Toro y Moi’s “How I Know” is a great exception though. “How I Know” is about three guys who enter a house haunted by two female ghosts that just want to have a little fun with them. The song has a 70’s retro feel to it that is perfectly matched by the video, which captures the style of 70’s Euro haunted house horror films perfectly, while being really fun and tongue-in-cheek at the same time. It’s a treat to watch.

Upon checking out the director Jordan Kim’s Vimeo page I discovered that they had made another excellent video for Teams vs. Star Slinger’s “Close To Me” about a space alien that just wants to do a nice deed by returning a pretty girl’s car keys…or does he? I hope Jordan Kim keeps making music videos, because these are really fun to watch.
