This video for Beirut’s “Santa Fe” is also a little weird, but in a really good way. You kinda just have to watch the story of it twist and turn to see what I mean. Both the song and the video are just dripping with personality. I was never really a Beirut fan before, but I kinda am now.
I gotta warn you, this music video is really weird. It’s so weird that I almost didn’t even post it. But the song is just too good not to share. What’s interesting about this video is that even though Adult Swim produced it, “I Surrender” isn’t the Ford & Lopatin song included on their stellar Adult Swim Singles Program 2011. That would be “Too Much Midi (Please Forgive Me)”. Apparently Adult Swim just loves Ford & Lopatin so much that they had to make a music video for “I Surrender”. You’ll understand why when you take a listen.
Today I got a fortune cookie that told me “Today you will find something you have been looking for.” I’m not sure I was looking for a Brazilian cover of The Cure’s “Let’s Go to Bed” by two gay guys and a tranny, but hey, cookies work in mysterious ways. I’ll take what I can get.
Banda UÓ are giving away free downloads of this song and four other dance pop covers on their Soundcloud page.
Since summer officially ended today with Labor Day I thought it’d be nice if we all gave it one final send off with this magnificent unofficial fan video for Bon Iver’s “Michicant”. Shot in the woods of Vermont, it reminds me so much of summers as a kid back home. What a great way to say goodbye.
The kaleidoscopic music video concept has been kinda done to death, but in this case I’m going to allow it because this song kicks ass. “Brothers & Sisters” is dark and a little gothic sounding, but it also has this really cool, propulsive beat that drives the song forward and lightens it up a bit. Great stuff.
Mash-ups can be tricky. Despite what most amateur DJs on the internet may think, you can’t just get the beat to match two popular songs, combine the two together and then get yourself a hit. It just doesn’t work that way. Some artistry is still involved, which French 17-year old DJ Madeon fully understands in this mash-up he made from 39 different songs.
OK, few notes about this video. The first song (actor-you-recognize-but-can-never-remember-where-from) Martin Starr queues up on the radio and says “Well this song sucks” to is actually Madeon’s own remix of Yelle’s “Que Veux-Tu.” Now if you remember that video, which was up on my blog here, then you probably had a little déjà vu when watching this video. Why was that? Well the guy who made this video, Nathan Barnatt, is the same guy who made the Yelle video. If you didn’t remember him from the way the videos were shot, then you definitely remembered him from this killer dance move:
And did I mention Madeon recorded “Pop Culture” live? Here’s the original video of him creating the song:
I really like this music video for St. Vincent’s “Cruel”. On the surface it appears to be the story of a man who uses his crippled daughter as a lure to kidnap St. Vincent to make her a mother to his children, but I read into it a little deeper and I believe the video is a metaphor for unhappy housewives and domestic servitude. At certain points in the video she is tied up, trapped, and drowned, and the most explicit and recurring image is of her being buried alive. Couple that with the very 40’s-esq melody that pops up again and again and I see this as a metaphor for women who feel trapped in a marriage because of her kids.
That’s just one interpretation, I guess. Beyond all of that heavy stuff though is a pretty fun music video that combines that previously mentioned 40’s melody with modern electronic indie beats and a video that, despite the serious implications of the message, also contains the image of St. Vincent nailing a guitar solo while locked in a car trunk. Good stuff.
“Cruel” is the first single off of her upcoming third album, “Strange Mercy”.
This unofficial video for Panda Bear’s “Alsatian Darn” is trippy as hell. It’s kind of how I always thought a Panda Bear track would look if you could just see the sound. The video is an experimental animation project by Ori Toor that’s just really cool to look at. It’s a bit like watching The Beatles’ Yellow Submarine movie on acid, and that movie was pretty much already made on acid. The first time I saw it was after I came home on my birthday with a decent buzz going, and it was a pretty amazing experience. If possible you should do the same before watching (although if you don’t I don’t think it makes it any less amazing a video).
If you’re a fan of cheesy 80’s-ness and The Lonely Island’s absurdist brand of musical comedy, then you are going to love Ninja Sex Party. In their newest music video Danny Sexbang and Ninja Brian take over a science class to teach kids the real story of how dinosaurs invented lasers.
At this point you’re probably trying to figure out which member of the band you want to sleep with, so the guys try to make your decision easier with their aptly named song, “The Decision”.
Now that you’ve made your decision on who you want to make sweet monkey love to, learn all about what the actual experience is going to be like at their “You Can Do Us!” seminar. Put on your sex hat and enjoy.
Ninja Sex Party have a bunch more videos at their website. I suggest you specifically check out the epic four part “The Sacred Chalice” video.
