Active Child – Johnny Belinda

If you’re looking for the perfect soundtrack to go with footage of stormy summer weather on the East Coast of Australia, then you could do a lot worse than use an Active Child song. This video for “Johnny Belinda” is one of those rare videos that is both visually and audibly stunning in every way. There aren’t many bands that can rock out with a harp, but Active Child pulls it off beautifully.

Altered Images – Happy Birthday / See Those Eyes

MNDR posted this video on her Facebook page the other day with the caption “Why doesn’t everyone sing like this?” This brought two thoughts to my mind. First, she’s right, why doesn’t everyone sing like this? This was a style of singing that you saw a lot of out of the UK, specifically Scotland (where this band is from), during the early New Wave period that kind of died out almost as quickly as it began. Then my second thought was, doesn’t MNDR sing like this? At least someone is keeping the tradition alive.

Here’s a bonus video of them playing “See Those Eyes” at Top of the Pops in 1982.

Sabrina – Boys (Summertime Love)

Australia’s Michelle Jenneke became internet famous this week when this video of her winning the 110 meter hurdles last weekend at the 2012 World Junior Championships in Barcelona went viral for the little dance she did pre-race to stretch/get rid of the jitters. It’s only the cutest, most adorable things you’ve ever seen this side of a box of kittens. And of course with the internet being the internet, someone slowed the footage down and set it to 80’s Italio-disco hit “Boys (Summertime Love)”. The result: Internet gold.

Upon doing a little research for this post I discovered that the original video for Sabrina’s “Boys (Summertime Love)” is actually one of the most downloaded videoclips in internet history, primarily because of the fact that in the video the bikini top that she’s wearing keeps falling down repeatedly, showing glimpses of her nipples. It probably then goes without saying that this video is a little NSFW.

Ages – Lisa

I love it when you’re just randomly surfing the internet, looking for some new music, and you come across a band that you’ve never heard of whose music you enjoy almost immediately after hearing something from them. This song is a perfect candidate for chill-out Sundays. If the dream-like sound of “Lisa” combined with the color saturated footage of sheets on clotheslines blowing in the breeze don’t help stir up some nostalgic childhood memories from the deep recesses of your mind, then I’m not sure I know what will.

Erika Spring – Hidden

What really bothers me about this song is that I was already familiar with it before I saw this video, but I can’t remember why. It wasn’t on any of my mixtapes, nor did I post anything by Erika Spring before. I’ll have to check my iTunes when I get home to see if I can solve this mystery. In the meantime if you’re not already familiar with “Hidden” then you can enjoy it in all of its glory below.

Purity Ring – Fineshrine

For such a pretty song, ‘Fineshrine’ has kind of a disturbing chorus:

Get a little closer, let it fold
Cut open my sternum and pull
My little ribs around you
Through arms that may be crowns over you
Get a little closer, let it fold
Cut open my sternum and pull
My little ribs around you
Though arms may be under, under you

Wait, what? She wants the person she’s singing to to climb into her chest? The video is equally mystifying. I think it’s about a girl who was in a plane crash transferring the accident in a dream to the man she loves, imagining it happened to him instead of her, but I could be wrong. None of this really matters, I guess, because otherwise the song is pretty amazing. See for yourself:

Saint Etienne – I’ve Got Your Music

Saint Etienne asked their fans to send in video of them posing with their favorite vinyl to use for Saint Etienne’s newest music video, “I’ve Got Your Music”, and they compiled the best footage into what you see here. The result is a quaint cute little bit of fan service set to one of Saint Etienne’s better new songs.

Van She – Coconuts

A YouTuber named Babieofthe Eighties makes their first video be for Van She’s “Coconuts” using footage of surfing, Lamborghinis, and girls in bikinis, and all is right with the world.

Jessie Ware – Wildest Moment

Simple, understated, and stunning all at the same time, Jessie Ware’s newest video for “Wildest Moment” manages to knock it out of the park with a casual ease that other artists only wish they had. Usually videos this simple can be dull or boring to watch, but Jessie’s ability to light up the room makes this video mesmerizing to watch. I can’t wait for her new album ‘Devotion’ to come out this August.

Die Antwoord – Baby’s On Fire / I Fink U Freeky

Die Antwoord’s first album ‘$.O.$.’ was a fun little novelty record from some truly batshit crazy South Africans who rhyme in both English and Afrikaans. There were some good tracks on the album, like the song that put them on the international map, “Enter The Ninja”, but overall the record was a little blah. Aside from a few standout tracks the rest of the album was pretty forgettable.

I like their second album ‘Ten$ion’ a lot more. The beats are better, their lyrics are catchier and everything’s a whole lot more memorable. Everything sounds like a rave on crack. Take this video for “Baby’s On Fire”, which is just fucking crazy/awesome. I mean, like, what the hell? This video is amazing. Not only is the song bangin’, with its ready for the dancefloor acid house beats, but the video is also this hilarious little mini-movie featuring Ninja as an older brother wanting to keep his little sister Yo-Landi Vi$$er away from the local hoodrats. The video and song just explodes with personality. This is seriously one of the best music videos I’ve seen in a while.

Equally weird and random is this video for “I Fink U Freeky”. Die Antwoord isn’t for everybody, but you can’t help be a fan of this stuff if you seek out the weird and bizarre. You have to be a little freeky to like this stuff, but if you do you’re going to have a ball with it.
