Rest In Peace, Alex Chilton (A Public Service Announcement)

Of all of the big celebrity deaths of the last year, none has really had the impact on me as the recent passing of Alex Chilton. Now I know a lot of you are probably going, “Who?” at this point and that’s a real shame, because there are very few people out there who have had such an enormous impact on music with so few actually knowing who they were. Chilton is truly one of the greatest examples of a cult figure in the music world.

At the start of his career in the late 60’s Alex Chilton had a string of pop-soul hits with the Box Tops, such as ‘The Letter’ and ‘Cry Like a Baby’, but he disbanded the group in 1970 to create one of the greatest rock and roll bands of all time, Big Star. The band’s first record, #1 Record, was/is truly a great record, but by a cruel twist of irony it was mismanaged by the record label and never became the hit record it deserved to be. Chilton wrote so many great songs on it, like ‘In The Street’, which is more commonly known as the theme to That 70’s Show, and ‘Thirteen’, one of my all time favorite songs.

They followed #1 Record with their second album, Radio City, but the damage was already done on the band by this point and the group quickly disintegrated. The different members of the group went on to other things, but none of them ever came close to reaching greatest ever again. It’s a damn shame, because songs don’t get much better than ‘September Gurls’, which was on their second album.

These two albums represent musical perfection for me, and are the ideal companion to summertime. Try to not feel nostalgic while listening to them in your car, driving around the countryside on a lazy late summer afternoon. Alex Chilton had the songwriting skills of a Lennon or McCartney, and Big Star should have been as big as The Beatles, but alas it was not meant to be.

Thankfully the few people who did buy the album when it first came out passed their knowledge of it down to other record store addicts and cult of Big Star was born. Big Star stands out there with The Velvet Underground and The Sex Pistols as one of the most influential bands of all time, most obviously heard in The Replacement’s hit, ‘Alex Chilton’.

Do yourself a favor and buy #1 Record and Radio City. If this isn’t already a part of your music collection it should be, especially since you can usually find both albums on a single CD for a measly 10 bucks. Trust me–it’ll be one of the prize albums in your music collection in no time.

O M F G

Hot Chip has easily put out one of the craziest fucking music videos I’ve ever seen. I’m not even going to describe it. You just have to check it out for yourself. A + +

[To those who aren’t familiar with Hot Chip, the guys on stage aren’t them. You can see them briefly in the audience towards the end. They are the awkward guys out of place in the crowd of teenage girls, looking like a modern day Devo (which is kind of what Hot Chip is, actually).]

Weekend Music Video Mash Up

I was never really a big fan of Vampire Weekend’s first album. To me it was kind of like the Little Miss Sunshine of the indie music world: cute, endearing, and fun but lacking a whole lot of substance and not nearly as good as everyone made it out to be. For me the only real reason you would ever listen to it over and over again was if you were trying to score with a college undergrad.

On the other hand I’m really enjoying their second album, Contra. Even though it has only been out a little while I’ve already listened to it way more than I have their debut. The songs sound more dynamic, complex, and catchy. With this album I feel like they are finally starting to live up to the hype machine that arose before their first album even came out.

The second single from this album, Giving Up the Gun, is a favorite of mine and has a really neat video. Lots of great cameos, including the RZA as a line judge and Jake Gyllenhaal as a stiff competitor.

Enjoy:

(By the way, did you catch them on SNL last night? They played one of the best musical guest sets I’ve heard in the last couple years.)

Next up is Goldfrapp’s new single off her upcoming album, Head First (out March 23st), called Rocket. One of the neat things about Goldfrapp is how their sound changes from album to album while still staying very recognizably Goldfrapp (probably because of Alison Goldfrapp’s unmistakeably unique voice). While their last album was more on the mellow, ethereal side, this new single sounds a lot like the 80’s electronic dance music that is coming out of Australia right now (think Cut Copy). The (slightly disturbing) video even looks a bit like she’s driving through the Outback in some sci-fi Aussie-sploitation movie.

Enjoy:

After the break, two more videos. One from Rihanna doing her best M.I.A. impression and another from a band I’m sure you’ve never heard of.

New Artist to Watch = We Have Band

Are you looking for some new dance rock in the vein of Bloc Party or The Ting Tings?

We Have Band have been just under my radar for a while now. They have slowly been building up a little bit of awareness in the back of my mind lately, but it wasn’t until their newest video came out that I really became a fan. After going back through their various singles and really digging what I had only heard one/two times before, I can honestly say I really like this band now. It sounds like indie rock with a dance tempo, a little electronic keyboard sound, but not too much to scare off the alternative crowd, and I love that they have three vocalists in the band.  I predict these guys are going to blow up big when their album finally comes out. It’s really good stuff. Enjoy!

Full length Debut album WHB out April 5th.

Lots more cool videos after the jump!  (Including one where a cat says hello in Arabic.  Don’t believe me?  See for yourself!)

I love Cibo Matto’s Sugar Water, ever since I heard it first on Buffy the Vampire Slayer. But still.

I want some of what they’re smoking.
