Gomma All Stars feat. Peaches – Maniac

I’ve honestly never been a fan of Peaches, but you can’t help but love this cover of Michael Sembello’s “Maniac” from the iconic 80’s film, Flashdance. This track, produced by Moullinex, screams sex and the video is just dirty enough to make you question whether or not it’s appropriate to watch at work.

“Maniac” is part of a 4-track EP called ‘Casablanca Reworks’ out now that Peaches made covering songs by Donna Summer, Giorgio Moroder and the Skatt Brothers, with production coming from Telonius, Munk and The Phenomenal Handclap Band.

Beat Culture – Before You Go

While this video is nothing more than footage of a cheetah with some pretty colors and filters layered over a shot of waves coming in on a beach, the song alone is unique enough to get itself a post on this Sunday of relaxing tunes. You can download their new album “Tokyo Dreamer” for free on their Bandcamp page.

Alex Winston – Choice Notes

“Choice Notes” was originally released as a 7″ single in 2010, but it just got the full music video treatment to help promote the release of her debut album ‘King Con’ on March 6th. “Choice Notes” is another fun little pop ditty from Alex Winston, whose voice is so unique in music right now. Even the act of walking through a broke down neighborhood in Detroit (which is what she’s doing in this video) is brightened up by listening to this song.

Class Actress – Bienvenue

Class Actress’ ‘Rapprocher’ is one of the best albums of 2011 and in case you didn’t already know that, here’s some proof in her new video for “Bienvenue”. Shot in some of the more picturesque parts of Paris, the video features singer Elizabeth Harper falling for a Parisian model while her pretty vocals and soaring synths play in the background. Another great song for a cold winter afternoon.

Active Child – Hanging On

I posted a live performance of Active Child’s hauntingly beautiful “Hanging On” a little while ago, but now there’s finally an official music video to go with this stunning song. As the video first started I was prepared to be bored to tears by it, but there is actually something very gripping about watching these guys go fly fishing to this song. The cold, misty imagery fits the mood and tone of this song perfectly. If I was out today and took a walk by a cold winter stream, this is the song I’d want playing on my iPod.

Rachel “Mini Thug” Bilson – Call Me Doctor

Oh man, I love this video.

Rachel Bilson is one of my favorite actresses. True story: I didn’t watch The O.C. when it first came on because it looked like just another 90210-type soap and I just wasn’t interested in that sort of stuff, but after hearing all the buzz surrounding the show and watching the admittedly intriguing commercials for each week’s new episode, I finally broke down and started watching the show and I almost immediately fell in love with it. I’m still an O.C. nut today. And part of that has to do with Rachel Bilson. After watching all the commercials I was set to hate her character Summer for being the rich spoiled bitch that Seth shouldn’t be with. He should be with Anna, right? The cute nerdy girl that gets him. Why would he want to be with Summer? Then I actually saw Bilson’s performance and hey, I get it. While she was a little grating at first, the writers did an excellent job fleshing her character out and she quickly became one of the best characters on the show.

Today Rachel Bilson has a new show on the CW called Hart of Dixie, which while not perfect, is actually one of the best new shows of the 2011-12 season. It feels a lot like if Everwood took place in the Gilmore Girls’ Stars Hallow down South. And while it’s not yet as good as either of those shows it has a lot of promise and is becoming more charming and quirky as the weeks go on. I’m actually really looking forward to its return from winter hiatus next week.

All that brings us to this hilarious music video Bilson made for Funny-or-Die that rivals Natalie Portman’s SNL digital short–whom Bilson calls out in the song (Watch your back, Natalie!)–in which Bilson calls out all the haters who say she doesn’t make for a believable doctor on Hart of Dixie. It’s pretty funny stuff. Watch the video for the surprisingly catchy beat and Rachel’s sick flow and stay for some funny cameos by a few of her Hart of Dixie co-stars.

[Edit: I don’t know how to embed this video on WordPress, so I’m just going to give you a link to go see it here.]

And no, I have no idea why there is so much blank space after the video.

MNDR – #1 In Heaven

I love MNDR’s voice, how every song sounds like it’s the last song she sings before her voice gives out after a long night of partying. There’s a joyful exuberance to how she sings, with just a tiny bit of scratchiness in the back of her throat to give her voice a unique sound. Her newest song, “#1 In Heaven” actually lifts its lyrics from a Patty Hearst quote: “After she was arrested for robbing a bank where someone was murdered, her only press statement was, ‘Tell them (my brothers and sisters) I am smiling and send my greetings.'” Love it, and I can’t wait for her debut album to come out.

Santigold – Big Mouth

Santigold’s sophmore album ‘Master Of My Make-Believe’ is due out this spring and as a preview we get this video for “Big Mouth”, which looks and sounds a lot like a M.I.A. song. It has the same sort of African/Caribbean rhythms and Major Lazer-style beats (which makes sense, since it was produced by Major Lazer’s Switch and Portuguese band Buraka Som Sistema). The video is pretty fun, full of bright Crayola colors and cartoon-y graphics. The song is definitely a fun booty shaker, which you can pick up for free on Santigold’s website.

M83 – Lower Your Eyelids to Die With the Sun

This isn’t a new song or music video from M83 (The song is actually from their 2005 album ‘Before The Dawn Heals Us’), but it is one of my favorite songs of theirs put to some jaw-droppingly incredible surfing footage. The story behind the video is that on August 27th, 2011, the waves off Teahupo’o, Tahiti were labeled “double code red” by the French Navy, who, according to the cinematographer Chris Bryan, threatened to arrest anyone who entered the water. Naturally they took their boards out on the water anyway. Anyone who is a fan of surfing footage, gigantic monster waves and/or M83 should absolutely check this amazing video out.

Austra – Spellwork

Here’s the new video for Austra’s “Spellwork”, off of one of last year’s best albums, ‘Feel It Break’. The video’s nothing special, as it just features some models in colonial-type witch garb frolicking in the forest looking all model-y. The video is a little student film-ish if I’m being completely honest, but the song is killer so it’s worth checking out.
