This isn’t a new song or music video from M83 (The song is actually from their 2005 album ‘Before The Dawn Heals Us’), but it is one of my favorite songs of theirs put to some jaw-droppingly incredible surfing footage. The story behind the video is that on August 27th, 2011, the waves off Teahupo’o, Tahiti were labeled “double code red” by the French Navy, who, according to the cinematographer Chris Bryan, threatened to arrest anyone who entered the water. Naturally they took their boards out on the water anyway. Anyone who is a fan of surfing footage, gigantic monster waves and/or M83 should absolutely check this amazing video out.
As you may have noticed, I am a fan of surfing. I surfed for many years in Florida, starting at Jax Beach. The last time I surfed was with my bud, Eric Hall. He’s on my FB. We would shred the little Florida waves, doing cut backs and rounders. Of course, now, I live in an area that goes against my grain, as I’ve been a beach person ALL my life. All my tattoos are about the ocean. It’s just a part of me. My dad was a popular surfer back in the day, too. He’s who taught me when I was 12. My first board was a twin fin lightning bolt board. Old school for sure, but he used a long board, which are coming back in style. Today, I follow professional surfing, and I doubt that will ever change.
Thus, this video was awesome to me, not just because of the surfing, but also because I absolutely love M38. It was perfection to me.
I’ve watched plenty of surfing movies and I don’t think I’ve ever seen one with waves like that. That alone makes this video worth watching. It’s like a Hollywood special effect, except it’s real.
Oh! If that is the case, then you have to watch Big Wednesday. Jan Micheal Vincent is in it, and he was amazing as a surfer. While it’s Hollywood, this was where my dad learned to surf, and he went to school with all the actors except Gary Busey. Gary was NOT a real surfer. Ever.
As a surfer, I mean he was an amazing surfer for real. The waves are real, too. It’s an oldie but a goodie movie. Available on streaming Netflix, too.
Sadly, it’s not currently streaming on Netflix.
