Rosemary – Sleep Alone

Want more iamamiwhoami? Well I don’t have any more. Jeez, I just gave you a new video this morning. Chill out, guys. I guess if you really need something to hold you over while you wait for the next chapter in the Mop Monster saga you can enjoy this song by Rosemary that sounds very iamamiwhoami-ish.

Bear In Heaven – Cool Light

Bear In Heaven wants to help you out with your physical fitness in this fantastic unofficial fan-vid from David Dean Burkhart. Going through his work, I discovered that Burkhart has made quite a few amazing videos just like this (including two for Grimes that I’ve previously posted). You can probably expect to see me post more of his fan videos here in the future.

iamamiwhoami – in due order

If you were hoping that the latest entry in the Mop Monster Saga was going to clear up some of the more confusing details of the last video I’m sorry to say that things only get more obscure here. Gone completely is the barn (and the car) from the last video, and instead we are transported to one of those clean white rooms you see in music videos all the time. What is back are the dancing Mop Monsters, who this time have worked out a dance routine with iamamiwhoami. Is there an overarching, interconnected story to all of these videos? I guess we have to wait until the next video to find out.

Dum Dum Girls – Coming Down

Full Disclaimer: I didn’t really like the first Dum Dum Girls album. It all sounded like overhyped hipster noise to me. The album was ok, I guess, but not really deserving of all the attention it got on sites like Hypem. I kind of feel the same way about the first Strokes album. I didn’t get it. It was almost as if the album was engineered to make disgruntled rock journalists happy. Just like the later Strokes records though, I really like this new stuff from the Dum Dum Girls. “Coming Down” reminds me a lot of Mazzy Star’s “Fade Into You,” super smooth and stripped down, darkly romantic and wistful.

The video is appropriately minimalist and I will say that it doesn’t really go in the direction that you think it’s going to go, so you don’t have to worry about suddenly closing your browser if someone else walks by.

The Neighbourhood – Sweater Weather / Female Robbery

The latest buzz band out of California right now is The Neighbourhood, a laid-back guitar pop band whose retro-noir sound can be most obviously be compared to Lana Del Rey. Their best song right now is the insanely catchy “Sweater Weather”, whose chorus “It’s too cold for you here. Now, let me hold both your hands in the holes of my sweater” will be stuck in your head in a matter of moments. It’ll be interesting to see if they can use this song to rocket into the mainstream like Lana’s done. I have a feeling you might be hearing this song on repeat on Top 40 radio this summer.

While the way the singer phrases his lyrics are a lot like how Lana Del Rey does it, “Female Robbery” even uses some samples straight out of Lana song and the found footage used in the video feels exactly like something Lana would have used. I guess what I’m trying to say is that The Neighbourhood is the perfect band for something who’s a Lana hater but still secretly likes all her songs and wants something new that they can listen to out in public with all their hipster hater friends.

Van She – Idea of Happiness

Yay! Van She are back! I thought the band had broken up for good when they all split up to do their own things, but not only are they back with a new video but apparently there will also be a second album out this summer too. This is very good news indeed. The song is classic retro 80’s Aussie dance pop and the video, well it’s pretty much exactly what I imagine normal daily life in Australia is like. Enjoy.

Flight Facilities – Foreign Language (feat. Jess)

I’m a little shocked and embarrassed that I forgot to post this video back when I first saw it. Now I did post a video of this song before in a fan made roller disco video that fit the track really well, but this official version of the video is beyond amazing and ramps up that 70’s kitsch factor. The video is shot as if it were the opening credit sequence to some mid-70’s action show or grindhouse flick shot in the south of France. It’s beyond cool. I just love stuff like this.

Azealia Banks – 212 (feat. Lazy Jay)

“212” is one of those songs that I’ve been holding onto for what feels like forever, always saying I was going to go back to it and post it but then never following through, which is a shame, because this track is bangin’. Seriously, what was I thinking, internet? “212” is amazing and must be shared.

The song starts off with this stripped down dancehall beat that’s catchy as hell, basically guaranteed to get your booty shaking. Then Azealia’s lyrics come in, sliding in perfectly with the rhythm and raunchy as hell, but also very playful and fun. And then right when you think you’ve got the song all figured out she switches from rapping to singing at around the halfway point and you discover this amazing voice, smooth and sticky like molasses. Throw this song on at a party and watch the atmosphere in the room jump up to eleven. I can’t wait until Azealia Banks releases a debut album full of this stuff.

L’Étoile Mystérieuse – Empire

“Empire” is some pretty epic French dream pop with an African vibe to it. Other than that, I don’t really know much about this French duo. Luckily this song is memorable enough to keep me entertained and intrigued until they put out something new.

Porcelain Raft – Unless You Speak From Your Heart

This playful video has Porcelain Raft mirrored by two copycats to his soothingly beautiful track “Unless You Speak From Your Heart” from his debut album ‘Strange Weekend’. It is the perfect innocent music video pallet cleanser to follow the weirdness of that Miike Snow video.
