Puro Instinct have collaborated with Strip Steve on the first single from his upcoming album, ‘Micro Mega’,and it’s a pretty killer track. The video is appropriately trippy according to the “Astral Projection” theme and the song is a nice slice of disco-tastic heaven. It’s the perfect kind of song for this beautiful, breezy summer day.
Is this a concert video? Is it a music video? Or is it both? Whatever it is, it looks and sounds amazing. Every time I watch it I’m blown away by the grainy black & white footage, straight out of some student film in the 60’s, and the stripped down, late night, small club sound of the band. It’s rare that a video can ever make you feel what it’s actually like to be at a concert, but this video does as good a job as any video that I’ve ever seen in putting you right there at the event.
The official music video for CFCF’s “Exercise #3 (Building)” is a stunning short vignette about a girl who discovers that color exists in her black & white world. The plotting, pacing, atmosphere, and story all perfectly match the mood of the song. It’s rare that you ever see a music video that is comprised of such a beautifully shot, self-contained story that works from beginning to end in perfect harmony with the song it was created for, like a little short film.
It has kind of become this unwritten rule out there that if an indie band brings on Steffaloo to sing vocals on a track for them, that that song is going to be amazing. It is pretty much guaranteed that whenever I see her name attached to a song I know before even listening to the song that it’s going to impress, which is all the more amazing considering how many different producers she’s worked with. Obviously she has great taste.
The video for “Low Life” begins with old footage from some TV show where a DJ is trying to explain/demonstrate to the host how scratching and mixing a record can add new life to a song, which immediately gives some major gravitas to the track. Intercut with our DJ is footage of some mysterious woman that appears whenever Steffaloo’s vocals bleed into the awesomesauce. Tours has already put out some great songs, but “Low Life” far exceeds them all. This is already one of my favorite songs of 2012 and you can pick this song up for free from Tours’ Soundcloud page, along with pretty much everything else they’ve recorded so far.
Haim’s “Forever” has a little bit of everything in it. There’s a 90’s alternative girl group vibe to them, their vocals evoke 80’s R&B and the production values include some more modern sounding tropical guitar and synth sounds. All and all, the combination of all of these different sounds by this band of real life sisters adds up to an extremely catchy tune. The video is really fun too, as the ladies have some real star presence. Be sure to keep an eye out for Haim in the future.
You ever go to a rave and drop some acid, only to then notice a dance troupe of ballet dancers have run into the building? Probably not I’m guessing, but if that ever did happen to you, I imagine it probably would have looked a lot like this video for Florence + The Machine’s “Spectrum”. This video is batshit crazy insane and I love it. I love every part of it, from the gold 70’s jumpsuit to the choppy, spastic editing to the creepy mini-me Florence doing all the ballet in the red fright wig.
Do you remember that amazing video for “Midnight City”, featuring kids with telekinetic powers breaking out an institution, that I called my 2nd favorite music video of last year? Well, M83 made a sequel to that video featuring the song “Reunion” which is equally amazing and well worth the half a year wait. In this video the kids who broke out in the last video come under attack by one of their own, who appears to be brainwashed by whoever was holding them captive to bring the others in. Like the last video this one is beautifully shot and staged and definitely has a moment or two that will take your breath away. M83 never fail to impress and this video is not to be missed.
FAYE is a Swede who makes some pretty powerful electro vocal pop. While the song for “Water Against The Rocks” is utterly fantastic, the video is a little lacking. The entire thing is pretty boring actually, just her singing in the back of a cab singing away, so I decided to make the video more interesting by playing a little game of “Does she have eyebrows?” I know what you’re thinking: of course she does! But does she? Watch this video long enough and your mind will play some pretty crazy tricks on you.
“Come To Me” is a more traditional video, filled with lots of pretty images that don’t really add up to a whole lot, plus eyebrows!
This video from Jimmy Fallon’s 2002 comedy album ‘The Bathroom Wall’ made a reappearance on the internet this morning in reaction to the announcement that he has a new album, ‘Blow Your Pants Off’, coming out in a few weeks. “Idiot Boyfriend” is actually a pretty sweet funky jam in the style of the Bee Gees. Check the video out for the surprisingly catchy song, stay for the cameo by Zooey Deschanel before she was famous (and before her crazy bangs!).
