Gotye – Seven Hours With A Backseat Driver

Back before Gotye was making uber-addictive acoustic breakup songs with Kimbra that burrowed their way into your ears like those gross worm things in Star Trek 2: Wrath of Khan, Gotye made retro chillout electronica that reminds me a lot of early Bent or Lemon Jelly (anyone else remember them?). Rubber House Studio has taken “Seven Hours With A Backseat Driver”, a now six-year-old track from his album ‘Like Drawing Blood’, and made a new animated video for it featuring a stressed out elephant walking through a street filled with noir-ish cartoon animal nastiness. Or is it? The danger might spring more from his own neuroses than anything in reality. The song seems made for the video, not the other way around, and its style reminds me a lot of animation and art from the early 60’s. It’s a really awesome video and a surprising treat for your Monday evening.

Lushlife – Magnolia

What do you do when you want to make a music video that looks like a million bucks, but you’ve only got, say, $80 in your bank account? Well, if you’re smart you do something like what Lushlife did for their track, “Magnolia”. The video takes a very simple concept like turning the lyrics into cardboard masks and makes that concept seem like something completely brand new and original. What you get is one of the best videos of the year, and hey, the song is pretty dope too.

CTM – Jewel

Sunday just wouldn’t be Sunday without its requisite slow jam. This ethereal slice of R&B by Cæcilie Trier’s new solo project CTM drips like golden honey into your ears. Fans of Nite Jewel and Jessie Ware should definitely check this track out.

Tensnake – Mainline (feat. Syron)

This video is guaranteed to give you some flashbacks to the ‘glory days’ of 90’s house music in the best way possible. In fact “Mainline” takes what was best about that era and strips that sound to its core, offering up a slice of pure dance nirvana. If you’re not thinking C&C Music Factory or Technotronic while listening to this song then you’re missing out on a feeling of nostalgia that is the best kind of retro. Featuring stunning use of black and white footage with carefully chosen splashes of color throughout, the video on it’s own is a blast to watch, but coupled with the infectious song it becomes magical. Even if this isn’t your kind of jam, you’ve got to admit that this video is fun to watch. Love it.

Rhye – The Fall (Maurice Fulton Alt Remix)

How about something a little funky to get your day going? I’m always down for a music video that uses Soul Train footage, and this Maurice Fulton remix of Rhye’s “The Fall” is appropriately funky enough to justify co-opting all those sweet ass dance moves. The song starts off with more of a 80’s Chicago House vibe, but then about halfway into its groove the remix switches things up and sounds more 70’s disco inspired. Either way, you’re going to want to put on your dancing shoes.

Disclosure – Latch (feat. Sam Smith)

“Latch”, the new single from Disclosure and vocalist Sam Smith is so mad sexy that it inspires everyone in the video to spontaneously start making out. This song is so sexy that it creates magical magnetic fields between people’s lips that draw people together and compels them to want to shove their tongues down each others throats. If you’re looking to inspire some sexy-time in the near future just throw this song on when your partner is near and watch the sparks fly.

Die Antwoord – Fatty Boom Boom

I know, I know, it’s been a while since my last post. You get busy with things, you want to post, you actually have things you’re dying to share, but really the longer you go without posting the harder it is to get back into that groove. Plus, after a while you feel like you have to come back with something to really knock people’s socks off to say sorry for the wait. Well, thank God the world has Die Antwoord, because this uber-WTF video is totally worth ending C’est Non Un Blog’s post wasteland.

The video features a Lady Gaga lookalike taking a literal urban safari trip through Die Antwoord’s neighborhood, and let’s just say that’s when things get really fucking weird. The beat on “Fatty Boom Boom” is insane, and if listening to this song doesn’t make you want to rip shit up then you might want to check your pulse to make sure you’re still alive. Because this video definitely has the potential to kill someone.

Van She – Jamaica

Jamaica’s kind of become the “it” place for hip indie bands right now, even if you’re an Australian band like the always amazing Van She. Kinda makes you want to plan a vacation, no?

Airospace – 1:29am [定義] (prod. Shigeto)

Here’s a little gem I came across today for your chill out Sunday, some Japanese hip-hop straight out of Washington DC. Both the song and the video are a mishmash of Eastern and Western influences, which combined with the more recent fall weather is giving me lots of flashbacks to my college days, when anime and underground hip-hop freely flowed around each other in one cohesive whole. This video is definitely filling me with some nostalgia today.

Icky Blossoms – Cycle

Despite the fact that this video is composed entirely of footage from vintage porn, there are surprisingly little-to-no naughty bits showing in it. In fact you can see more actual nudity on your average cable TV drama than you do here. That said, the video is composed entirely of footage from vintage pornography, so it goes without saying that this video is NSFW. All of these lust-filled glances go extremely well with Icky Blossoms’ track, “Cycle”, which you’re definitely going to dig if you’re a fan of Glass Candy, or any of the Italians Do It Better musicians for that matter. This is retro digital music at its best.
