Syron – Here / Breaking

I’m guessing you probably already remember Syron from Tensnake’s amazing “Mainline” video. While “Mainline” was a clear nod to classic early-90’s House music, so far Syron’s own tracks remind me more of what European club music sounded like circa 2000, you know, before the whole scene imploded and went to crap. Both “Here” and “Breaking” are filled with chill, easygoing beats coupled with some great soulful R&B vocals. It’ll be interesting to see where she ends up going with her career.

Woodkid – I Love You

Now that we’re finally able to enjoy it in the US it’s time to enjoy the latest stunningly gorgeous video from Woodkid. I’m not exactly sure what’s going on in this video, but damn does it not look fantastic. I also love that opening riff of the song. Great stuff.

Tame Impala – Mind Mischief

The new video for Tame Impala’s “Mind Mischief” starts out innocently enough…well, as innocently as a hot-for-teacher video can start out. But then midway through things start to get a little…trippy. If that Bonobo video wasn’t psychedelic enough for you, then this video is just for you. Notice how the song repeats the same melody over and over again, just like the last video? Synergy!

Bonobo – Cirrus

Part of what I like about modern electronic and dance music is the slight variation on a repetition of a simple theme that builds and builds upon itself to make a whole so much greater than the sum of its parts, an idea that goes all the way back to Beethoven’s 5th Symphony. The first four notes of the 5th are probably the most recognizable four notes in all of music history, and what makes them so memorable is that the entire symphony is essentially made up of different variations of those notes repeated again and again. It was a revolutionary idea at the time and it wasn’t initially received very well, but those four notes proved to be the keystone of all modern music.

The reason why I just brought up Beethoven, of all things, is because this video for Bonobo’s “Cirrus” perfectly visualizes exactly what I’m (poorly) trying to verbalize. The entire song consists of one single theme played over and over again, but with minor changes here and there creating a feeling of something building upon itself that is never boring. The video likewise takes random footage from the Fifties and starts to repeat those images over and over, piling them on top of each other into some sort of trippy moving collage. Everything put together makes for a fantastic video that’s extremely memorable.

Ra Ra Riot – Beta Love

Blog favorite David Dean Burkhart made a fan vid for Ra Ra Riot’s “Beta Love” recently using footage from a local 1980’s LA UHF station show, ‘Dance Party’, and Ra Ra Riot loved it so much they actually made it into their official video. You can immediately see why the liked it so much. It seems like these kids from the past are dancing specifically to this song, and they seem to be having a great time dancing at that. As I’m wont to say, it’s really hard to go wrong with making a video using footage from an old dance show.

Toro y Moi – Say That / So Many Details / Cola

The year is still young, but I’m already 100% confident that Toro y Moi’s new album, ‘Anything In Return’ is going to be on a lot of Best Albums of 2013 lists. Start to finish, this album is pure amazing. I’ve already listened to it four times through and I love it more and more each time that I listen to it. I have to share with you the official videos for the first two singles off the album, “Say That” and “So Many Details”. Of the two, “Say That” has a French House feel, while “So Many Details” has more of a relaxed 70’s Euro-vibe. So good.

Finally I have a fan vid by blog favorite David Dean Burkhart for “Cola”, composed of footage taken from soft drink, liquor, and perfume commercials from the 80’s and 90’s. The content taken from those commercials perfectly fits with the song’s sexy atmosphere. This is easily one of my favorite Burkhart videos in a while, and it’s actually the song that inspired me to download ‘Anything In Return’ and start listening to it in the first place.

Lonely Island (feat. Adam Levine & Kendrick Lamar) – YOLO

When Andy Samberg showed up for the opening monologue in last night’s SNL you just knew he was going to show up again later in a Digital Short, but who knew that it would feature a brand new Lonely Island track? “YOLO” is a song about what pretty much everyone over the age of 21 thought the first time they heard about YOLO (you only live once, for those still not in the know), which is: Why in the hell would you do something that would maim or possibly kill you if you only live once? Shouldn’t YOLO mean that you should stop acting like a dumbass and live your life more responsibly? Well, this song answers that question.

Mykki Blanco – Wavvy / Kingpinning

Mykki Blanco may be one freaky dude, but he’s rocking some seriously sickass beats. “Wavvy” in particular has a beat that won’t fucking quit. Are you kidding me with that? It just keeps building and building into a real mind-melter. I don’t know what to make of this guy, but what I do know for sure is that I want to hear whatever it is that he’s going to come out with next.

Dizzee Rascal – Bassline Junkie

Dizzee Rascal literally preaches the virtues of big fat bass lines in his fantastic new video, “Bassline Junkie”. Who needs to do drugs when you’ve got enough bass to shatter all your windows? No one, that’s who. Love how clever this video is.

Droop-E (Feat. Nite Jewel & J-Stalin) – ‘N The Traffic

This new track by Droop-E has such a sick beat, like sweet NyQuil in your ear, so chill and sexy. Add to that a killer hook courtesy of Nite Jewel and you’ve got a recipe for a perfect late night hip-hop track. I love the video too, although I’m not sure why they included a new Bentley in a video that otherwise takes place in 1933 San Francisco, but I’m nitpicking. Very reminiscent of the early 90’s videos of Jay-Z and Biggie.
