Jaaska – The Elsa

Jaaska is yet another amazing artist that I’ve only just discovered because of David Dean Burkhart’s fantastic videos. His sound is similar to Blood Diamonds and Elite Gymnastics and, like them, his music is influenced by, among other things, Super Nintendo soundtracks from the early 90’s (listen for the Kafka laugh in “The Elsa”). Check out his Soundcloud page to download some of his stellar tracks for free.

This Burkhart video features footage of what looks like a strip club in Hong Kong (?) from a Mondo movie, that weird exploitation genre from the 70’s that promised non-stop footage of controversial sex and violence that actually seems pretty blasé today in the age of YouTube. There’s actually not as much nudity in this video as you’d think, but it’s still in there, so it goes without saying that this one is NSFW.

Florrie – Live A Little

After having been out of the spotlight for a while, Florrie is back with a new song written for the Sony XBA-C10 In-ear headphones campaign. Perhaps the multi-instrumentalist hasn’t put anything out recently because she’s been too busy showing off playing all of those instruments, as you can see in this new video for “Live A Little”. It’s a fun little video and it’s nice to see Florrie back making music again (she’s also giving this track away for free on her website right now, so grab it while you can).

Charli XCX – What I Like

Charli XCX is having a slumber party and we’re all invited. Apparently what she likes is the 90’s, as this video is giving me some serious teenage flashbacks. Whether you’re down with 90’s fashion or not, “What I Like” is easily the best song she’s put out in a while, and I can’t wait for the release of her upcoming full length album, True Romance.

Just one more song before I call it a night. I won’t say too much about it, just enjoy your seven minutes of Blackbird Blackbird epic awesomesauce amazingness.

Pogo – Kenya Chords / Wizard of Meh.

It’s been a while since I’ve posted any Pogo videos so I thought I’d do a little ‘Catching up with Pogo’ post. His most recent song “Kenya Chords” is easily my favorite song he’s posted since the last time I wrote one of his videos. Both the video and the song are composed of snippets from his recent trip to Kenya and it has one of the sexiest beats I’ve heard in a while. How could you not love this song? Close runner up is this video for “Wizard of Meh.” The samples are from ‘Wizard of Oz’ naturally, but instead of using footage from the film as a change of pace he filmed himself for the video samples. I love the black and white photography in this. The lighting’s gorgeous and the wardrobe is perfect for the time period the samples are taken from.

The Knife – A Tooth For An Eye

I’m so, so, so excited that The Knife are back together and doing their thing yet again. It’s been seven years (seven years!) since ‘Silent Shout’ was released and rocked my world, way too long to go without a new album. Sure the Fever Ray stuff has been nice in the interim, and double awesome bonus points for their song “If I Had A Heart” appearing as both the credit sequence music for The History Channel’s new show Vikings and appearing in a sequence on The Following the same week, but Fever Ray just isn’t the same as The Knife. I love those weird Scandinavian vocals layered over tropical beats, and they were doing this stuff years before it became cool for everyone else to do it. There’s a new album coming out in April and I could not be more excited to see what else they have in store for us.

Lapalux – Without You (ft. Kerry Leatham)

This video is weird. Like really weird. It’s not going to be for everyone, but I really like it, so that makes it good enough to act as my lead off video from my self-imposed, laziness-fueled sabbatical from blogging. The video’s story is about a woman who falls in love with a gimp, and if that alone doesn’t tell you that this video is probably NSFW, I don’t know what will. It’s an oddly compelling video though. I’m usually highly impatient the first time I watch a video, commonly skipping forward to see if I like the song at all, or just listening to the song in the background and completely ignoring the visuals the first time I play it, but I was sucked right in the first time I saw this. It doesn’t hurt that the song is a magical blend of dark futuristic R&B, perfectly suited to the video’s “unique” content.

Futurecop! – Atlantis 1997

Can you think of anything better to go with this brand new track from Futurecop! than this footage of Vanilla Ice? Fuckyeah1990’s was definitely onto something truly magnificent here. You’ll think Vanilla Ice was cool again for the first time since 1990. Fuck yeah is right. This video is fucking awesome.

Little Jinder – Whatever 4ever

“Whatever 4ever” is one of those songs you’ll find yourself singing along with at the top of your lungs when drunk, every time, guaranteed, which is why this video is so appropriate for it. If Big Bushy Beard guy can sing along to it at a house party, so can you. I don’t even feel like I’m drunk enough to properly write this, although in the long run that’s probably a good thing. Either way this is a pretty epic song worthy of listening to repeatedly and singing along even though it’s not really in your range. At all. But as the song says, it doesn’t matter.

Kate Boy – In Your Eyes / Northern Lights

Kate Boy is an exciting new pop act out of Sweden who sound a bit like The Knife at their most commercially accessible mixed with someone like Kate Bush. Both songs that they’ve released so far, “Northern Lights” and “In Your Eyes”, are fantastic. Both videos were shot in black and white, but for me it’s the “In Your Eyes” video that really stands out. I’m always a big fan of ‘Keep it simple, stupid’ and this video does a fantastic job of being simple and understated while still being interesting and visually engrossing. It’s really well made, putting the song front and center while never being boring.
