I NEED Your Help!

I’ve got a riddle for you folks that I’ve been struggling with for a couple of weeks now, that I hope you can help me out with. I somehow figured out randomly that the titles of the trades of the 100 Bullets comic series directly relate to the number of the volume that you are reading. Let me show you:

1. FIRST Shot, Last Call
2. Split SECOND Chance
4. A FOREgone Tomorrow
5. The CounterFIFTH Detective
6. SIX Feet Under the Gun
7. Samurai (AKA SEVEN Samurai, get it?)
8. The Hard Way (with a series this obsessed with dice, this has to be The Hard EIGHT)

You might have noticed that I left off #3. That’s what I need your help with. For the life of me I can’t figure out where the number three fits into the title. Here it is:

3. Hang Up on the Hang Low.

Super brownie points to anyone who can help me figure this out!

  1. I am not sure what you are doing here, but that number 3 is in a title of book. 100 Bullets Vol. 3: Hang Up on the Hang Low, by Brain Azzarello.

    • No, I realize that. Take a look at all of the titles again. Volume 1 is called FIRST Shot, Last Call. Volume 2 is called Split SECOND Chance. Volume 7 and 8 don’t actually have the number in the title, but through popular phrases we can infer the number. For instance, Volume 7 is just called Samurai, but SEVEN Samurai is a popular film directed by Akira Kurosawa that has influence plenty of people, including myself. The Hard Way could also be a hard EIGHT, since it is volume 8, and hard eight is a dice game term. Almost every volume has someone playing craps in it. Catching on?

I just can’t figure out what the title Hang Up on the Hang Low has to do with the number 3. Maybe I’m just missing something. That’s why I’m asking for help for my poor over stretched brain.

  2. wow…seahorsemystic was really helpful there, eh? “I’m not sure what you are doing here?” Did she even READ your entry? Balls! Anyway, an interesting boggler. I’ve been trying to figure it out all morning to no avail. My guess it has something to do with “hang low” and its various meanings. The “hang up” is just a play on the repitition of the word “hang” from “hang low” … and the key is the “hang low.” But fucked if I know what it’s referring to that has something to do with the number 3. Then again, Azzarello could just be fucking with you.

the hang low is slang for a penis. i don’t know if that helps. probably not.
