Architecture In Helsinki – Contact High

Although I’ve heard of them before, I hadn’t actually heard anything by Architecture In Helsinki until their new single “Contact High” came out. The song starts out with a very heavy electro sound, almost like Green Velvet with vocals by Mika, but by the time you get to the chorus it sounds more like Tahiti 80 with synth. I can’t get this catchy song out of my head.

Yelle – Safari Disco Club / Que Veux-tu

I love Yelle. There’s just something about her. She’s not traditionally beautiful, but like Karen O of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs she totally makes up for it with attitude. You can’t help but fall in love with her.

Her first album, Pop-Up, is dance pop perfection. But I got a little nervous after hearing her first single ‘La Musique’ off of her sophomore album, Safari Disco Club. It’s not a horrible song by any means, but it felt like Yelle was ditching her bouncy, sunny beats for a more arty, hipster-friendly sound. It’s all build-up without any release. Surely her next album wouldn’t disappear into mediocre obscurity, would it?

Well, have no fear. The very next video gave us two songs for the price of one, and they are both fantastic. All hope is restored that the album is going to be great. Plus, this is one of the best music videos I’ve seen in months. It’s fun, quirky, tongue-in-cheek and visually beautiful. What more could you ask for? I especially love the whip sound effect in ‘Que Veux-tu’. Really fun and cute. I’m predicting ‘Que Veux-tu’ is going to be my summer jam of choice. I can’t wait for this album now. Why don’t you join me in my love of Yelle?

Ninkasi Believer Double Red Ale & Pike Brewery’s 2010 Old Bawdy Barley Wine style Ale

Ninkasi Believer Double Red Ale

As you pour yourself a glass the first thing you’ll notice is that the beer is very aromatic and has a dark reddish brown color, with coffee/tan head. Already drinking it looks pretty appealing. Add to that a rich, thick, malty texture with a spicy flavor like spring clover, a little bitter, and a lot of hops, and you’re looking at a pretty satisfying drinking experience.

2010 Pike Old Bawdy Barley Wine style Ale

This is a seasonal beer for Pike, whose brewery is actually right around the corner from Pike’s Place Market in downtown Seattle. The beer has a thick texture, sweet and fruity flavor profile with an undercurrent of bitter aftertaste, like an IPA. It’s a nice pub beer for sipping (which is good, because if you drank it any quicker it would kick you in the face). It’s expensive though, at $9.95 for a 22 Oz. bottle.

An Introduction To Beer Blog

In addition to my regular posting I’d like to do something a little different. I’d like to write about beer.

I don’t pretend to be an expert on beer by any means, but I’ve recently come to the realization that it’s really hard for me to remember what it is I do and don’t like to drink, and it would be a huge benefit to me (and my memory) if I recorded my thoughts for future trips to the store. And hey, as long as I’m writing all of this down, why not share it with you?

Before I do that though, I’d like to share my personal drinking history. I actually never had a drink until college, and once I started drinking, at that point the only real purpose to drink was to get drunk. If I did drink I usually drank a lot, and it definitely was never the good stuff that we were drinking. After college I never really drank all that much because to do so meant driving at least twenty minutes away from home and I never really thought drunk driving was a good idea.

It wasn’t until I moved to Seattle that I really started taking an interest in beer, incidentally as a way to cope with the stress of work. When grocery shopping I started picking up a case of beer here and there and I’d go home and drink a beer or two after work to relax.

Well, at some point I actually started to like drinking a beer after work–you know, beyond its therapeutic qualities–but it was also at that point that realized I didn’t really know what it was that I liked and disliked. I’d buy a different case of beer every time I went shopping, but after a while I realized that I didn’t really like that one brand I had a month ago as much as I thought I did. I came to the realization that I wanted to learn more about beer and keep some records of what I did and didn’t like to really benefit my beer shopping.

As it happens, around the same time a new beer store opened up right down the street from me called The Beer Junction, and aside from having a huge selection, they also do weekly beer tastings. Here was a great place for me to broaden my knowledge about beer, become familiar with my local Northwest breweries, and be able to try something new every week.

These reviews will be pretty simple, focusing on my basic responses to what the beer looks, smells and tastes like, and ultimately how drinkable I find it to be. Really just my knee jerk, gut responses. Nothing special, but if you’re a beer drinker like me, I hope you maybe might discover something you’ve never heard of before. Since I’ll be looking at a lot of local West Coast breweries, there’s a good chance of that being true.

Thom Yorke Kills Justin Bieber

This is a little addendum to my Music Video Mash-Ups post from two days ago. Too hilarious not to share.

Win Win – Interleave

I have no idea what the background on this video is. It looks like it was crafted from found footage from some 80’s Soviet sci-fi kids movie, but who knows. Could have been shot today to look like that. Doesn’t really matter, since it matches the tone of the song perfectly no matter when or why it was filmed. Win Win are coming out with a self-titled album that’s not half bad, and ‘Interleave’ is the lead single off of it. If the voice sounds familiar that’s because the songs vocals are sung by Alexis Taylor, who you might be familiar with as the lead singer of Hot Chip.

Music Video Mash-Ups

If you’re a Radiohead fan then there is a very good chance that you already know that they just released a new digital album on the internet called The King Of Limbs. And if you know that then you’ve most definitely already seen Thom Yorke’s crazy dancing in the music video for ‘Lotus Flower’. What you probably haven’t seen though is all the spoof fan videos that people have made that have him doing his crazy dance to other people’s music. Well, here’s one video that compiles all those mash-ups in one convenient video:

Also, did you know that The Beatles did a cover of The Prodigy’s ‘Smack My Bitch Up’ at Shea Stadium? Neither did I, but it must have happened, because I’ve got a video to prove it.

Los Master Plus – Sexo en Fuego

This video is kind of amazing. Here’s just a sampling of a few of the many questions you will be asking yourself as you watch it:

Are they being serious here, or is this a joke?

Does this song really suck, or is it actually kind of genius?

Did I really just watch this video 14 times?

Did I just spend all night on Google trying to find an mp3 of this on the internet?

I kind of like this cover now better than the original, don’t I?

And…

What the hell is up with that ostrich at the end???

Alex Winston – Locomotive

I really, really like this song. Reminds me a bit of what would happen if you combined The Knife with Kate Bush. For those who love New Wave pop songs, you should definitely check out this video.

Only Girl (In The World)…on Zither

A little while ago I stated my love for Rihanna’s ‘Only Girl (In the World)’ by posting not only her video, but also an accapella version by Mike Thompkins and Shad. Well now I’d like to share probably the coolest version of them all, ‘Only Girl (In The World)’…on zither. Seriously, if anyone could find a full-length version of this with vocals I’d be in heaven.
