Nite Jewel – One Second Of Love

Every time I start listening to the beginning of “One Second Of Love” I think I’m not going to like the song, but as it keeps building upon itself I start liking it more and more. “One Second Of Love” almost reminds me of a Robyn song, from the beat it uses to the way she enunciates her lyrics. The song’s really grown on me and the video’s a real trip, almost as if it’s a deleted scene from Rosemary’s Baby where they throw a demented bachelorette party. It’s just weird enough that you’ll be saying “WTF?!” the entire time you’re watching, yet compelling enough that you won’t look away. This video has really grown on me and now I really dig it.

Young Hunting – Sweet Bird

Young Hunting have released a new single of delightfully dreamy retro pop in the same vein as Roy Orbison or Richard Hawley. It’s perfect music for a quiet Sunday afternoon.

iamamiwhoami – good worker

Just as soon as I finished my post for “drops” then suddenly “good worker” was released. And just like how “drops” picked up right where “sever” ended, “good worker” begins right where “drops” left off, with the mop monster dragging her off into the forest. Of the three songs “good worker” is probably my favorite. The song gives me goosebumbs every time I listen. Love it. Now that we know these videos are part of some sort of series, I can’t wait to see what happens next.

iamamiwhoami – drops

iamamiwhoami is back again with another video that takes place pretty much right after where the last one, “sever”, ended. The same apartment and the mop monster are back, but this time the melody sounds different from the usual stuff, as if it was produced by Röyksopp. As always, when you watch a iamamiwhoami video you know you’re in for a good time.

Miami Nights 1984 – Streets On Fire

The very appropriately named Miami Nights 1984 sounds exactly like, well, a night in Miami in 1984. They make some fantastic retro 80’s dance music in the same vein as Futurecop! and someone made a fan video for “Streets On Fire” with footage from Oliver Stone’s Scarface, which, incidentally enough, is also what I think of when I think of Miami Nights in 1984.

The Golden Filter – Kill Me

If we look at the progression of all the tracks that I’ve posted today and make a little mixtape out of them (hey, why not? I can’t stop posting!) then this is the dark conclusion to what I alluded to in my last post. That quiet, wintery, romantic vibe has gone off the rails to the darkside in this video from The Golden Filter about a mother who’s none to happy that her son has gotten engaged. While the video may be a little creepy, the track has a bubbly upbeat melody to counter-balance its darker lyrical content.

Keep Shelly in Athens – Our Own Dream

I think “Our Own Dream” would also qualifies for today’s theme of “make-out music for the end of the world”. This track feels really beautiful and yet dark and mysterious at the same time, like bad things are lurking just around the corner. But in the meantime, while we wait for that to happen, we’ve got some pretty music to relax to.

Night Works – I Tried So Hard

It’s rainy and cold outside, which I guess isn’t so unusual for Seattle since it’s pretty much been exactly like this for four months now, but I’m also getting a cold so nice chill music is kind of comforting right now. Night Works, which consists of former member of Metronomy, Gabriel Stebbing, describes this track as “make-out music for the end of the world”, which I think is a pretty apt description. If the end was coming and this song was playing in the background, I don’t think I’d mind all that much.

Chromatics – Back From The Grave

“Back From The Grave” is the fifth (!) single Chromatics have released for their upcoming album ‘Kill For Love’ and so far it’s also my favorite. It totally feels like a lost song from the ‘Drive’ soundtrack. I kinda wish it was nighttime right now so I could crank this up in my car while driving around.

Korallreven – Sa Sa Samoa (Elite Gymnastics remix)

Elite Gymnastics took Korallreven’s relatively chill and relaxed song “Sa Sa Samoa”, turned it into a 90’s hi-NRG rave song with just a dash of Whitney Houston for spice, and then created their own music video for the remix, which you can see below. The video is very appropriate for the 90’s vibe of the song and if you’ve ever visited their website you’d know that the video contains all the things Elite Gymnastics love. I especially love the nod to Final Fantasy 7 at the end. I don’t normally like 90’s stuff but this video is making me feel quite nostalgic. So crank the sound up, break out your glo sticks and get prepared to rave on.
