Is it Worth it?

All right, I have two DVD unrated/extended mini-reviews for you today. First up: The Extended 10th Anniversary Edition of Mallrats. This is a pretty extended Extended Edition. Basically a whole half hour of subplot with a 15 to 20 minute new opening to the movie was added back in. It basically explains why our main character is fighting with his way-too-hot-for-him girlfriend, and adds a little more to why her dad hates him. Her dad is getting a check from the mayor or governor (I can’t remember) for his TV show, but his daughter’s punk boyfriend ruins it by getting his rifle for a Paul Revier (sp?) musical he’s in stuck in her hair, thus making the bodyguards think an assasination attempt is taking place. That becomes a running gag throughout the movie, as everyone in the movie thinks that he kidnapped the president’s daughter, or something just as stupid.

Is it worth it? Not in the least. Very little of it is actually funny and it just makes what should be a light 90 minute comedy drag on for over two hours. It was a brilliant choice to cut out this section for the theatrical release because the movie really didn’t need it to make sense.

However, the nice thing about this DVD is that you can decide which cut you want to watch. I love it when they put both versions of the film on the same DVD. For once a movie studio wasn’t a money grubbing whore. So definitely pick up this version of the DVD.

Second up is the Unrated Cut of Hostel. Is it worth it? Well, for the life of me I couldn’t find one scene in the Unrated Cut that I didn’t remember from the Theatrical Cut. Which makes me wonder if they didn’t just add back in the few arbitrary frames of gore that the MPAA made them cut to get an R rating for the film. Because there is really nothing new. So is it worth it to buy this version of the DVD? Sure, why the hell not?

Finally, I’d just like to put it down for the record that tonight my family drunk dialed me. Isn’t that special?
